Mobile giant EE (BT) has formed a new alliance with several other operators, including Verizon (USA), Telstra (Australia) and kt (South Korea), in order to facilitate the development of LTE-Broadcast (LTE-B) technology that enables operators to send a single stream of data to all mobile users in one area.

Mobile operator EE (part of BT) has partnered up with Lime Micro and Canonical, both of which are key open source technology innovators, to launch a fully programmable network capability that could help to create new applications and improve 4G network coverage to remote rural areas.

Mobile operator EE appears to have been influenced by new parent BT and plans to improve customer support by bringing it back to the United Kingdom and hiring 600 new staff. On top of that they’ll increase their 4G landmass network coverage from 60% of the UK to 95% (99.8% population coverage).

A joint study from Which? and OpenSignal has revealed that actual coverage of 4G (LTE) mobile in the United Kingdom is poor, although EE (BT) managed to deliver the best 4G reach and Three UK came top for Mobile Broadband speed. But GiffGaff is still the highest rated by consumers.

Reports indicate that Virgin Media and Sky (Sky Broadband) could both sign significant mobile network capacity deals with Three UK (CK Hutchison Holdings), which is dependent upon whether or not the European Commission approves the proposed merger with O2 UK (Telefonica).

A new study has examined the 3G and 4G based Mobile Broadband performance of mobile operators O2, EE, Three UK and Vodafone across five major cities including Cardiff, Edinburgh, Liverpool, London and Norwich. Overall EE delivered the fastest Internet download and upload speeds in all cities, except Norwich.

The telecoms regulator has released their latest complaints report to the end of 2015, which reveals what mobile, TV, phone and broadband providers in the United Kingdom attracted the most consumer complaints. EE topped the naughty list for broadband, while TalkTalk dominated for fixed line phone gripes.

The telecoms regulator has today published their re-jigged annual 2016 report into the Internet performance of the United Kingdom’s largest fixed line home broadband ISPs and their customers, which reveals that the average home download speed has jumped from 22.8Mbps last year to 28.9Mbps now. But the gap between rural and urban areas is still significant.

Mobile provider The People’s Operator (TPO Mobile), which piggybacks off EE’s Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) platform, has launched its first UK 4G SIM-Only tariff that for just £6.99 a month will give subscribers 2GB of data, 600 minutes and unlimited texts (30 day contract).

Consumer magazine Which? has this week published the outcome from their latest reader survey of broadband ISP satisfaction, which saw Zen Internet and Utility Warehouse win the highest ratings. Unfortunately the same could not be said for TalkTalk, which had the lowest score by far.

RootMetrics have put together a general report of all their mobile network testing for the past few months and revealed their pick of the top 16 cities (Larger Urban Zones) in the UK for mobile network performance, which saw Manchester top the table and Hull hit bottom. But caveats remain.

Several major broadband ISPs including BT, Sky Broadband, EE, TalkTalk and Virgin Media will in April go to the Court of Appeal (London) in order to argue against a 2014 ruling by the High Court, which extended court ordered website blocks to include sites that sell counterfeit goods (abuse of Trade Mark).

Somehow we managed to overlook last week’s Q4 2015 results from EE, which confirmed that they added +6,000 extra home broadband customers in the quarter to total 933,000 (lower than the +8k added in Q3) and expanded their 4G (LTE) Mobile Broadband network to 95% of the UK.
