As expected the UK Competition and Markets Authority has today given their final clearance, without remedies, for cable broadband and TV provider Virgin Media (Liberty Global) and mobile operator O2 (Telefonica) to complete their £31bn merger (50:50 Joint Venture). A major full fibre and 5G rollout boost is anticipated.

The CEO of Vodafone, Nick Read, has reportedly said they are considering becoming an investment partner for BT Group’s £15bn rollout of gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP technology (here), which is currently aiming – via Openreach – to cover 25 million UK premises by December 2026.

UK ISP Giganet (M12 Solutions) has today announced that they’ve started to build their own gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network to 300,000 premises across poorly served parts of Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire and West Sussex, which is being backed by a £250m investment from Fern Trading.

People connecting to KCOM’s gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire will be pleased to note that the ISP will today launch a new range of packages with faster download and upload speeds. The standard prices have also been tweaked (some are cheaper, some are not).

After a bit of a delay, CityFibre has confirmed that their local civil engineering partner, MAP Group (UK), has finally started work to rollout a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network across the large North Yorkshire (England) town of Middlesbrough – costing £42m.

UK ISP Zzoomm has today revealed that their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network will shortly be expanding into Staffordshire (England), specifically thousands of homes and businesses within the town of Cannock, which is home to a local population of c.30,000.

The latest first quarter 2021 results (financial Q4 FY21) from ISP and mobile giant Vodafone UK have today been published, which reveals that their fixed broadband base added another +35,000 customers (vs +38k in the previous quarter) to make for a total base of 911,000. But their mobile base fell to 17,253,000.

Alternative UK ISP Zzoomm has announced that their new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network will next be expanded into Cheshire (England), specifically tens of thousands of homes and businesses within the large railway town and civil parish of Crewe.

UK ISP County Broadband, which is currently deploying a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) service across rural parts of Cambridgeshire, Essex, Norfolk and Suffolk in England, has today given itself a pat on the back after reporting a seven-fold (725%) increase in “business growth” (i.e. going from 16 employees in early 2018 to 116 now).

Rural UK ISP Wessex Internet has this week started to deploy a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband network in rural parts of South Somerset, which forms part of their state aid supported contract under the Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) programme.

The Pembrokeshire County Council’s (PCC) wider Digital Connectivity Programme (DCP) in Wales appears to have identified the next set of six rural communities (Phase 4 or 5) for their programme, which are likely to benefit from the rollout of gigabit-capable full fibre broadband ISP networks.

The BT Group has published their latest Q4 2020/21 results today, which reveals that Openreach has further expanded their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network rollout target from 20 million UK premises to 25 million by December 2026. The extended target will support an additional 7,000 jobs.

Openreach (BT) has today confirmed that a further 27 UK locations have been added to their £12bn Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband rollout plan, which is working to make their gigabit-capable network available to 20 million premises by the mid-to-late 2020s (currently building at a rate of c.42,000 premises per week).

The FTTH Council Europe has published their annual 2021 market panorama, which ranks the countries with the strongest subscriber penetration of “full fibre” (FTTP/H/B) based ultrafast broadband ISP networks. The good news is that the UK has continued to show strong growth, but we remain stuck at third from the bottom.

Ofcom’s latest Spring 2021 update for UK broadband and mobile networks has revealed that “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage has grown to 21% (up from 18% in Sep 2020) and 37% or 10.8 million homes are within reach of a gigabit-capable (1000Mbps) network (up from 27%). But sadly 4G coverage has not improved and there’s no mention of 5G.

The CEO of BT’s Consumer ISP division, Marc Allera, has today called on the UK Government to help support the industry by making it easier for home broadband providers to launch new social tariffs via targetted funding or subsidies, which could come in a number of different forms.
