UK ISP Virgin Media has discounted the price of their 100Mbps to 350Mbps standalone ultrafast broadband packages for the first 12 months of service (minimum contract term), which now start from just £28 per month (£42 thereafter). On top of that they’ve also removed the £35 one-off setup fee (expected to last until 29th April 2020).

The on-going Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis appears to have prompted Openreach (BT) into taking further action to help broadband ISPs and their SME business customers, particularly those firms that have had to temporarily stop trading following the UK Government’s lockdown measures.

After starting the roll-out in September 2019, it now looks as if Cityfibre’s new £40m and 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network in the East Midlands (England) town of Northampton, which is initially being supported by Vodafone (and TalkTalk to follow), has finally gone live for their first customers.

Hull-based UK ISP KCOM, which covers a big chunk of East Yorkshire with their “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband network and growing (here), has revealed that the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) crisis has resulted in a 45% increase over normal levels of online traffic. During peak periods this has hit 160Gbps (Gigabits per second).

Consumers looking to take one of Vodafone’s new Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based Gigafast Broadband ISP packages (based off Cityfibre’s £4bn roll-out programme) may like to know that their entry-level tier is now a symmetric speed of 200Mbps – previously 100Mbps – and all for the same price (£28) as before.

The latest independent data has estimated that Cityfibre’s £4bn programme, which aims to roll-out a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network to cover 8 million UK premises (hopes to be substantially completed by the end of 2025), has now reached a total of 279,801 premises passed.

In a new interview the CEO of ISP WightFibre, John Irvine, has spoken to ISPreview about some of the challenges they’ve faced in deploying Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband across the Isle of Wight (England), particularly obstacles created by the council, and their future hope of covering 71,000 premises by 2025.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA) and Point Topic have today estimated that alternative “full fibre” (FTTP/B) broadband ISPs grew their UK coverage by 50% in 2019 (up from 23% last year) and now reach 1,223,168 premises passed. Going forward such providers aspire to cover 15,734,673 by the end of 2025.

In an unsurprising development Openreach (BT) has informed UK broadband ISPs that, due to the current COVID-19 (Coronavirus) crisis, future G.fast and Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) build plans beyond last month “are not available.” Related engineering work to extend the network continues but has been scaled-back.

Rural UK full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP Gigaclear, which since last year has been working with their investment partner Infracapital to develop a “long-term funding strategy” (including an assessment of further debt funding), has today confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’ve secured £525m in financing.

UK ISP Zzoomm has announced that, in response to the crisis caused by COVID-19 (Coronavirus), customers of their new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network will all be given a free upgrade to their 900Mbps (average speed) package, which normally costs £89 per month.

The BBC has given its response to the UK Government’s (DCMS) consultation on their proposal to decriminalise TV licence fee evasion, which among other things includes a suggestion that the fee could be replaced by a levy or tax on consumer broadband bills. But they are not “advocating” for that, yet.

Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) ISP Voneus has acquired another rival broadband network called Rural Comms Limited, which until recently served a number of remote rural communities in parts of Devon and Cornwall (England) – mostly operating from Ivybridge and focused around Exmoor, Dartmoor and South Hams.

Manchester-based UK ISP Telcom, which has active plans to roll-out a gigabit-capable “full fibre” and broadband network to cover various homes and businesses across the North West of England and Midlands, has acquired the Yorkshire-based infrastructure firm SDH Project Services for an undisclosed sum.

Cityfibre have this morning confirmed that they’ve completed their £200m purchase of FibreNation from UK ISP TalkTalk, which increases the operator’s roll-out ambition for 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband technology from 5 million to nearly 8 million premises, supported by an investment project of up to £4bn.
