Several local authorities in England, including Staffordshire, Devon and Somerset, have begun to consult on the next phase of their respective projects for expanding the coverage of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) services. Thousands more premises and some FTTP is on the cards.

At the end of last year the B4RN East Anglia (B4RNorfolk) ISP began construction of a new community built and funded “hyperfast” Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network for rural villages in parts of Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex (England). Today the first properties have been connected.

The Balquhidder Community Broadband project, which is a Community Interest Company (CIC) that has won support from UK ISP Bogons and the Stirling Council in Scotland, has officially launched their new 1Gbps FTTP broadband network that will serve all 197 premises in the Balquhidder area.

A meeting of the UK Wireless Internet Service Providers Association has named the four suppliers that are bidding on Scotland’s R100 project, which aspires to make “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) available to 100% of the country by the end of 2021 (March 2022 as a financial year).

Rural fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has handed the civil engineering contract for deploying their 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to 10,000 premises in West Oxfordshire (England) to Lite Access (international contractor). The rollout is due to complete by the end of 2019.

The joint £35m project between cable ISP WightFibre and Infracapital, which aims to deploy a new Gigabit capable ultrafast Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network to cover 53000 of the 61000 homes on the Isle of Wight (Hampshire, UK) by the end of 2022, has begun.

Fibre optic builder Cityfibre and ISP Vodafone have today announced that the next UK city to benefit from their joint deployment of a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) broadband service will be Peterborough (Cambridgeshire), which is supported by an investment of “at least” £30m.

The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority in England has today proposed to invest a further £5.5 million into helping expand the availability of 300Mbps capable FTTP “full fibre” broadband, as well as improving Mobile (4G and 5G) and public WiFi coverage over the next 4 years.

Full fibre broadband ISP Community Fibre has today followed yesterday’s announcement (here) by signing a new agreement with the City of London Corporation, which will see their 1Gbps UK FTTH broadband network being extended to cover 2,800 residential properties in the area.

A second fibre optic ISP, Community Fibre, has this afternoon announced a separate agreement with the London UK borough of Southwark, which will see them deploying their 1Gbps FTTH broadband network to 54,000 properties owned by the local authority.

The General Manager of “ultrafast broadband” at TalkTalk has switched sides and will soon join Virgin Media to become an Executive Director of Connectivity. The move comes ahead of both the ISP’s commercial G.fast launch and after their proposal to rollout 1Gbps FTTH/P to 3 million premises.

The London borough of Southwark has signed a new deal with 1Gbps UK fibre optic broadband ISP Hyperoptic, which should result in around 53,000 council homes and 46,000 other homes in the area (at no cost to the taxpayer) gaining access to their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP/B) network.

As first hinted in February (here), Openreach (BT) has today confirmed that they will hire 3,500 new trainee engineers over the next 12 months. The recruits are needed to help the operator deliver on its promise to make 1Gbps capable FTTP “full fibre” broadband available to 3 million premises by 2020.

The UK government has launched a new nationwide Gigabit Broadband Voucher Scheme (GBVS), which is funded by a pot of £67m and aims to provide vouchers worth up to £3000 for businesses (SME) or £500 to residents to help with the costs of connecting to “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband.

Openreach (BT) has issued a new notice to ISPs that sell their Gigabit capable FTTP on Demand broadband product, which reminds them of how “FoD capacity” will continue to be “constrained” by an “industry-wide operational capacity of 20 FoD orders per calendar month.”

The central England city of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire UK has today announced a new deal with Swedish FTTH provider VXFIBER, which pledges to roll-out an “open access” and Gigabit capable “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband network to cover both “residents and businesses.”
