The Fastershire scheme in Gloucestershire and Herefordshire (England) has confirmed that they’ve sent Gigaclear’s revised Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband roll-out plan back to the drawing board. The move follows last year’s news (here), which revealed that the UK ISP’s contract had suffered “unexpected delays.”

A number of broadband ISPs including TalkTalk, Hyperoptic, Cityfibre and Gigaclear, as well as the Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), have written to the UK Government and Ofcom in the hope of encouraging tougher measures to prevent Openreach (BT) from hampering “full fibre” (FTTP) competition.

Rural fibre optic broadband ISP Gigaclear, which is currently still in the process of trying to tackle some significant civil engineering delays, has upgraded their core transport network to make use of Ciena’s 6500 Packet Optical platform. The move supports the provision of 100G channels across the UK.

The Superfast Essex (SFE) project has now confirmed that they too have been affected by Gigaclear’s civil engineering delays, which means that the ISP’s planned roll-out of a 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the UK county will now complete in July 2020 instead of December 2019.

An attempt by the Maldon District Council’s Finance Committee to block £45,000 of funding for the local roll-out of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+), which is being conducted alongside Essex County Council UK, has been stopped after members of the district council voted against the committee’s decision.

The Essex County Council has confirmed that it will meet next week in order to discuss some of the “challenging” work conditions that UK ISP Gigaclear are said to be facing in the county, where they hold several state aid supported contracts for the roll-out of a 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network.

The FTTH Council Europe has today welcomed a vote by the European Parliament to approve the new European Electronic Communications Code (EECC), which could boost investment in “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband and 5G mobile. But they also called on the EU to get tough on “fake fibre” marketing by ISPs.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project and UK ISP Gigaclear have issued a new joint statement, which states that the provider has yet to “demonstrate a credible approach” for each area in their revised roll-out plan. As a result their state aid supported deployment of 1Gbps FTTP broadband remains on hold.

The cries of “oh no, not another one!” can already be heard today as the Superfast Berkshire project in England joins others in confirming that their roll-out of fibre-based broadband ISP networks – via both Gigaclear and Openreach (BT) – will face a significant delay in the county (affecting both Phase 2 and 3 contracts).

The fallout from Gigaclear’s admission that their state aid fuelled roll-out of 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP services under the Connecting Devon and Somerset (CDS) project was “significantly behind schedule” has continued this week, with several local MPs calling on the councils to take stronger action.

The Scottish Government is consulting on changes to Section 130 of the New Road & Street Works Act 1991, which seeks to create a uniform technical standard for “narrow trenching“. This could encourage greater use of the technique by broadband network builders and better safeguards across Scotland’s 33 road authorities.

Trouble seems to be brewing in Maldon after councillors on the District Council’s Finance Committee were said to have voted unanimously to ask the full council to scrap its deal for helping to fund the roll-out of “superfast broadband” with Essex County Council, which would have contributed £45,000 to the effort.

The state aid supported Fastershire project has announced that they’ve secured a further £5m of funding from the Government’s Rural Broadband Infrastructure Scheme (RBIS), which will be used to extend a new hybrid fixed wireless and fibre optic ultrafast broadband network to reach remote premises in 10 additional areas.

The Rural Services Network and UK ISP Gigaclear have today joined others by calling on Ofcom to ensure that their forthcoming 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband will reflect the national plan for “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage, which the government hopes could reach universal coverage by 2033.
