Rural fibre optic broadband ISP Gigaclear has claimed that fever over the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia is turning into “white-hot rage over terrible internet connections.” Meanwhile mobile operator EE saw broadband usage “drop drastically” throughout all matches, while 4G mobile traffic did the opposite.

Broadband ISP BT has announced that they’ve become the first major UK pay TV provider to offer access via their YouView (IPTV) powered set-top-box to Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service, which will show up as an app to customers of the service. But those with their Youview+ Ultra HD (4K) boxes have to wait.

Customers of Virgin Media’s cable based TV and broadband ISP bundles in the UK, specifically those who don’t yet have Netflix, will from October 2018 be able to instantly add and pay for Netflix’s popular internet video streaming service through their VM bill.

Earlier this year BT splashed £295m per season to secure the rights to show 32 Premier League matches on BTSport UK for a further three years from the 2019/20 season (here). Today the broadband ISP and pay TV provider has added 20 additional matches to that total by spending another £90m (total cost of £975m).

The BBC has announced another UK iPlayer trial of their 4K (Ultra HD) and High Dynamic Range (HDR) video streaming quality, which will cover all 29 of their 2018 FIFA World Cup matches. Unfortunately to get the most out of this they’re recommending that users have “at least” a 40Mbps broadband ISP connection.

The final UEFA Champions League match between English football club Liverpool and Spain’s Real Madrid is to be shown free by UK broadband ISP BT via YouTube, the BTSport TV app and other mediums. The UEFA Europa League final will also be made available to millions of fans who do not yet subscribe .

BT has released their Q1 2018 (calendar) results, which sees them increase FTTP and Mobile infrastructure investment via an annual capex allocation of around £3.7bn (excluding BDUK) and report that 1.56 million UK premises are now covered by their G.fast and FTTP based “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+).

All for a single bill. Sky UK (Sky Broadband) has today announced a new partnership with internet video streaming giant Netflix, which will enable them to bundle the full Netflix service into a new Sky TV subscription pack. This combines content from both providers side-by-side for the first time.

Broadband customers who signed-up last year to trial TalkTalk’s new YouView (IPTV) based Multi-Room TV service are finally starting to receive their kit. The ISP is aiming to launch the service commercially during early 2018 (most likely around late March or April).

Both BT and Sky UK (Sky Broadband) will continue to spend big on their respective UK Pay TV platforms after tonight reaching a £4.464bn deal, which will allow them to show Premier League Football matches for a further 3 years from the 2019/20 season onwards.

BT has released their latest results to the end of 2017 (Q4 calendar), which saw their retail UK broadband ISP base add 35K subscribers to total 9,342,000 (vs +22K in Q3). Meanwhile their FTTP and G.fast “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) services reached 886,000 premises (up from 770K).

Customers of UK cable operator Virgin Media have noticed that their TV channels are finally being migrated from the old MPEG2 to newer MPEG4 (H.264) video standard, which is a subtle but still quite important change, albeit one that has created the odd small gremlin.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has today published their latest results to the end of December 2017 (financial H1 2018), which reveals that Fibre (FTTC) penetration increased to 33% (up from 21% last year) of their UK broadband base but there’s still no sign of their Sky TV without a satellite dish (IPTV) service.
