Customers of BT’s YouView (IPTV) based broadband TV service can no longer access the ISPs premium content (e.g. the Discovery Channel, FOX, SyFy, MTV etc.) by using unauthorised set-top-boxes, such as those purchased from third party retailers.

PlusNet has informed ISPreview.co.uk that their 8 month old customer trial of a YouView (IPTV) based broadband TV service is “going very well“, but sadly even after all this time they’re still unable to give any indication of when a commercial launch might occur.

Sony has given broadband ISPs another set of data hogs to worry about after they confirmed that consumers in the United Kingdom would be the first in Europe to beta test their new PlayStation Now streaming service in 2015, while their PlayStation TV product (designed to take on Google Chromecast and NOW TV etc.) is expected to surface this autumn 2014.

BT has confirmed that new and existing TV (IPTV) customers will be able to watch the new Sky Sports 5 channel, which is dedicated to European Football, on their BT Vision+ set-top-box when it’s launched by Sky today (channel 524). But standard broadband (non – BTInfinity) subscribers will have to wait a few weeks longer.

Budget ISP TalkTalk has revealed the latest results for Q2-2014 (calendar), which saw their broadband subscriber base grow by +10,000 in the quarter to total 4,206,000 (i.e. stable growth from +10k added in Q1). Meanwhile their planned roll-out of ultrafast FTTP broadband in the city of York is also making progress.

The broadband based YouView (IPTV) catch-up and video-on-demand TV service, which is also bundled via several broadband ISPs (BT, TalkTalk etc.), has today launched a cheaper and faster set-top-box for retailers called the Humax DTR-T2000 (NOT to be confused with the HDR-2000T). But sadly there’s still no mention of WiFi support.

The latest Q1-2014 global broadband report from UK telecoms analyst Point Topic has revealed that the world is now home to 690.1 million fixed line broadband subscribers (+1.9% in the quarter), which is up from +0.4% recorded at the end of 2013. It’s also the first quarter where the market share for older copper line broadband connections (e.g. ADSL, SDSL) has dipped below 50%.

The High Court in London has today ruled that YouView, which offers a subscription-free broadband based TV (IPTV) service via retail and through ISPs like BT and TalkTalk, infringes upon a trade mark (YourView) owned by online billing firm Total Ltd.

UK ISP TalkTalk has unveiled a revamp of the ‘Player’ for their YouView (IPTV) TV based broadband and phone bundles, which ordinarily gives customers access to all the latest blockbuster movies and catch-up content. The enhanced Player includes a series of new features, such as an improved search engine and more of the latest blockbusters to rent from £4.00 for 48hrs.

The growing importance of fast Internet access in the delivery of modern television content has been highlighted again after Sky (Sky Broadband) revealed that 50% of their 10.6 million TV customers in the United Kingdom had connected their Sky+HD set-top-box to broadband in order to benefit from on-demand and catch-up-tv content.

Modern televisions and set-top-boxes that have adopted the pan-European Hybrid Broadcast Broadband Television (HbbTV) specification, which supports Internet capable features like digital teletext, catch-up TV (IPTV), electronic programme guides, interactive advertising, games and more, could be vulnerable to a simple radio attack by hackers.

But unlike the primary box, which is usually included at no extra cost, the second one won’t be free and you’ll need BTInfinity (FTTC).

Budget Internet and phone provider TalkTalk has today released its latest results for Q1-2014 (calendar), which saw them add +10k new broadband customers in the quarter to total 4,196,000 (better than the +5k in Q4-2013). But of most interest are their plans for ultrafast FTTP broadband and a converged fixed-mobile offer using 4G spectrum and femtocells.
