The Carmarthenshire Council in South West Wales has approved, as part of the wider Swansea Bay City Deal, an investment of £55m to boost digital connectivity in the region, which among other things looks set to help deploy more “full fibre” broadband connectivity and support improvements to mobile networks.

The University of Surrey has launched the UK’s first 6th Generation Innovation Centre (6GIC), which will act as a “global research hub” to help develop future 6G based mobile broadband tech. Apparently this could take an “entirely new approach” from the tradition of pushing ever-higher data rates over ever-higher spectrum bands.

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today launched its first “own brand” 5GEE Wi-Fi based mobile broadband router, which they rather boldly claim can offer “customers 5G speeds as fast as fibre in more places than any other operator.” Admittedly, they don’t seem to be comparing this to gigabit speeds on FTTP.

The UK Government yesterday introduced new powers for the Secretary of State to, among other things, establish a new Universal Service Obligation (USO) for 4G or 5G mobile networks “in the future,” albeit only if that is “deemed necessary.” Questions will now be raised over what such a USO would look like.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has today announced that, since April 2020, they’ve increased their 4G based (mobile broadband) network capacity in over 33,109 postcodes across London, which they say includes some of the city’s most residential boroughs. More capacity tends to improve data speeds by reducing congestion.

Technology firm Cambridge Consultants (CC) and Stratospheric Platforms Limited (SPL) have collaborated to build a new kind of wireless antenna, which could be installed on aircraft (e.g. drones) operating at an altitude of 20,000 metres and used to distribute 5G mobile broadband services over areas up to 140km in diameter.

The BT Group has today published their Q2 2020/21 results, which saw Openreach expand their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network to cover 3.5 million UK premises (up from 2.98m last quarter). The full fibre build rate has now hit 40,000 premises per week (up from c.34,000).

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica) will today extend their existing partnership with Hubbub (here), with the aim being to donate 10,000 devices and 12 months of free calling and internet connectivity to “digitally excluded people” in UK cities that are either facing, or at risk of, new Tier 3 lockdown restrictions (COVID-19).

Mobile operator EE (BT) has today unsurprisingly chosen Ericsson to be their new supplier for ultrafast 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) deployments across major UK cities, such as London, Edinburgh, Belfast, Cardiff and more. The move marks a further step away from Huawei, which has been banned.

Thales in the UK, working alongside Nokia and SkyFive, has today announced that their new 4G LTE Air to Ground (A2G) network is being made available to the global market, which could mean faster in-flight WiFi speeds of up to 100Mbps (shared between all of the passengers) and latency times of less than 50ms.

RootMetrics has today published a new study of 5G based mobile broadband speeds and latency, which compares the network and coverage from EE (BT), Vodafone, Three UK and O2 in order to determine which operator is likely to deliver the best cloud gaming (remote play video games) performance in London.

The Scottish Government has today linked their new Scottish Broadband Voucher Scheme (SBVS) to the UK’s Rural Gigabit Connectivity (RGC) programme in order to significantly boost the value of their vouchers, which expands the pot up to £8,500 for SMEs and up to £6,500 for homes.

Ofcom UK has today given notice to Motorola and Sepura of a proposed infringement decision, which provisionally finds that the pair “broke competition law by exchanging competitively sensitive information” in relation to a contract for the continued operation of Airwave, the existing Emergency Services Network (ESN).

A new Censuswide survey of 2,006 UK adults, which was conducted during August 2020, has helped to reveal roughly what proportion of people believe various different myths and falsehoods about the latest generation of ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband technology. Sadly 7% still believe 5G is connected to the spread of COVID-19.

The Satellite and Terrestrial Network for 5G (SaT5G) project, supported by various UK telecoms operators like BT, Avanti and €8.3m of EU funding, has for the first time successfully managed to integrate a standard commercially available 5G core (mobile broadband) network into a live Satellite network.

Mobile operator O2 has today announced that their new ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband network has been extended to cover a total of 108 UK towns and cities (up from 60 in June 2020), which puts their rollout ahead of schedule and includes locations such as Milton Keynes, Ipswich and Chelmsford.

Ookla, which runs the popular Speedtest.net service, has this week published their latest Q3 2020 study of UK fixed broadband and mobile data speeds across the market’s largest providers, which perhaps unsurprisingly sees Virgin Media (fixed) and EE (mobile) come top of the table.
