The European Court of Justice (General Court) has today annulled a decision by the European Commission’s competition authority, which in 2016 blocked mobile operators O2 and Three UK from merging. The ruling found that the decision to block the £10.45bn deal had failed to prove that such a merger would damage competition.

Mobile operator EE has today launched a new “Reserve Data” feature alongside their latest range of 5G ready ‘Smart’ and ‘Smart SIM’ Pay Monthly mobile plans, which will effectively enable customers to continue using internet (mobile broadband) services – at a slower speed – even if they’ve used up their allowance.

Opensignal has taken another brief look at 10 mobile operators offering 5G based mobile broadband speeds in the UK, USA, South Korea and Australia to see how their performance compares. Overall even the early 5G deployments are significantly faster than 4G, but download speeds at EE and Vodafone are trailing a bit.

EE (BT) has published their latest Mobile Network Data report from February to May 2020, which tracked the changing trends and habits of the UK’s most used internet apps and services throughout lockdown. The report also revealed a 45% increase in data (mobile broadband) use for communication services (WhatsApp, Skype etc.).

After the fact. Ofcom has today set out the final funding regulations for their legally-binding Universal Service Obligation (USO), which went live in March (summary) – supplied by BT and KCOM – and aims to ensure that people in disadvantaged areas can request a minimum broadband speed of “at least” 10Mbps (1Mbps upload).

Finnish networking firm Nokia claims to have achieved a “world record” 5G based mobile broadband speed of 4.7Gbps (Gigabits per second) via their live Over-the-Air (OTA) network in the USA (Dallas, Texas), which used the company’s existing commercial software and hardware solutions. Interestingly 4G helped to give it a boost.

The latest 2020 State of Mobile Networks report from Opensignal has ranked the United Kingdom 36th out of 100 countries for its average mobile broadband download speed (22.9Mbps) and 31st for 4G network availability (89.2%). Meanwhile, one year after deployments first began, the impact of 5G remains small.

Mobile giant and broadband ISP Vodafone UK has published their latest results to the end of March 2020 (financial Q4 19/20), which saw them reach a total of 751,000 fixed broadband customers (up by +64K in the quarter vs +20K previous quarter). Meanwhile Mobile customers hit 18,042,000 (down by -14K vs +250K previous quarter)

Crowd-sourced analyst firm Opensignal has today released some updated benchmarks of early 5G based mobile broadband network deployments across several countries, which shows that average download speeds in the UK have reached 138Mbps – way above 4G on 24.9Mbps and WiFi on 34.1Mbps. But other countries are faster.

Cable broadband ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) and mobile operator O2 (Telefonica) have this morning confirmed that they’ve reached a complementary 50-50 joint venture deal to merge their respective fixed line broadband and mobile network businesses in the United Kingdom. But Vodafone could still crash the party.

Mobile operator Three UK has published a brief update on the impact of the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) on their national 4G and 5G based network, which among other things has seen data (mobile broadband) usage increase by 12% and calls grow by 8% to 2.5 billion in March 2020.

A new study has analysed 5,554 mobile data (mobile broadband) plans across 228 countries this year in order to compare the cost of a 1GB (GigaByte) data allowance, which found that the United Kingdom has significantly improved its rank to 59th (up from 136th in 2019) with an average price of $1.39 USD per GB (down from $6.66).

The business division of broadband ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has this morning confirmed that they’ve signed a new deal with mobile network operator Three UK, which will see VMB’s fibre optic lines being harnessed to supply capacity (backhaul) to fuel over 3,000 of the mobile firm’s new ultrafast 5G sites.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) is today in the news for a second time this week after they issued a “letter before claim” (legal challenge) against Ofcom’s forthcoming auction of the 5G (ultrafast mobile broadband) friendly 700MHz and 3.6-3.8GHz radio spectrum bands, which demands more harmonisation of the spectrum.
