The UK telecoms regulator has today confirmed that they will proceed to auction of the 700MHz and 3.6-3.8GHz radio spectrum bands in spring 2020 to boost new 5G networks to potentially Gigabit-capable (1000Mbps+) mobile broadband speeds. But in light of last week’s Shared Rural Network deal (here), the coverage obligation is gone.

RootMetrics has today published their first tentative report into the initial availability and mobile broadband performance of 5G Mobile networks in the West Midlands city of Birmingham, which sees EE delivering the fastest data speeds and strongest coverage.

Vodafone UK has become the first UK operator to confirm that they will help Transport for London (TfL) to pilot a new 4G (mobile broadband and voice) network through tunnels and at station platforms on the London Underground (tube trains), which will start with the eastern half of the Jubilee line from March 2020.

Mobile operator Three UK, specifically their Three Wholesale division, has today announced their first pilot of a Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN / LPWA), which is intended to form the foundation for an eventual nationwide roll-out in order to help connect Internet of Things (IoT) devices (e.g. remote sensors, smart devices etc.).

The Welsh Government has confirmed £4 million to support the Digital Signal Processing (DSP) Centre of Excellence at Bangor University, which among other things will look at ways to harness existing fibre optic technology in the 5G network to “improve capacity, flexibility, functionality and services.”

Customers of Three UK are reporting that the mobile operator appears to have suffered a significant network outage overnight, which began at just after 11pm and is still on-going for some users. Most of the problem appears to be centred around data (mobile broadband) connectivity, although access issues with text s and voice calls are also reported.

O2 (Telefonica) has today become the last of the four primary UK operators to switch-on a commercial ultrafast 5G based mobile broadband network, which is initially live across several key hubs in busy areas of Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, London, Slough and Leeds. Plus it comes at no extra cost on “Custom Plans.”

The incumbent broadband, 4G mobile and phone provider on the English Channel Island of Guernsey, Sure, has announced a major 5-year plan to invest several million pounds in order to upgrade their sub-sea fibre optic links with the United Kingdom. This could increase network capacity to 300Gbps (Gigabits per second).

The Church of England has reached a new agreement with the network sharing division of Vodafone UK and O2 – Cornerstone – to help boost 4G and future 5G mobile network coverage into poorly served areas (both rural and urban locations), which should make it easier for them to install discreet antennas.

BT has today – as promised earlier this week (here) – taken the wraps off their new EE-based UK 5G mobile plans with bigger data (mobile broadband) allowances of up to 200GB. But their new “unlimited mobile data” plan will follow in November with the launch of Halo (combining fixed broadband and mobile together).

Ofcom and benchmark firm P3 have examined a sample size of 150,000 UK mobile users, which revealed that people in Liverpool make the longest calls (average duration of 6 mins 51 seconds) and more than half of us (60%) use less than “1 gigabit (GB)” – we think they meant GigaByte – of mobile broadband data a month.

The latest October 2019 Mobile Network Experience report from Opensignal, which used crowd-sourced data to test 4G and 3G based UK Mobile (Mobile Broadband) performance, has once again named EE as the best overall operator as it beat arch rivals Vodafone, O2 and Three UK in almost every single category.

UK ISP BT is poised to launch a new convergence plan for both home and business customers called “Halo“, which should complement their existing “Plus” packages with a number of new features (e.g. ultrafast 5G and unlimited usage for both mobile and broadband). Free upgrades for ADSL users to “superfast” plans are also coming.

Wireless infrastructure firm Arqiva, which among other things builds and manages many of the masts and rooftop sites used to deploy 4G and 5G services by UK mobile operators, has today announced the £2bn sale of their telecoms business to rival pan-European tower operator Cellnex (Spain).

Mobile operator EE has announced that their new 5G ultrafast mobile broadband network, which started to rollout across London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham and Manchester in May 2019 (here), has now been switched-on in even more of the UK’s “busiest transport hubs and city centre destinations.”

A new uSwitch.com commissioned Opinium survey of 2,010 UK adults (conducted during July 2019), which has been complemented by data from Opensignal, claims that 23 million consumers (45%) still struggle to connect to 4G, while 5G “looks unlikely” to fix this since it will only be available to 28% of the country by the end of 2019.

Mobile network operator Vodafone UK has, in somewhat of an “industry first,” agreed to help extend Mobile Broadband coverage by sharing some of its “unused” 4G radio spectrum with StrattoOpencell (part of the Digital Colony UK Infrastructure Platform) in order to offer high-speed data in “remote areas without fibre connectivity.”
