The UK Government has abandoned part of their £35m trial of 5G based mobile broadband and fibre optic technology on the Trans Pennine rail (train) route between Manchester and York, which is a joint effort between Network Rail, the Local Full Fibre Networks (LFFN) and 5G Testbeds & Trials (5GTT) projects.

The Citizens Advice agency has claimed that 71% of UK Mobile customers with SIM-Only plans are “overpaying for data they don’t use,” such as when connecting via 3G or 4G (mobile broadband). The estimated average amount of data “wasted” each month is 2GB, which they equated to a total cost of £800m per year.

RootMetrics has today published their latest H2 2018 study of 4G and 3G based mobile network performance in the United Kingdom, which once again found that EE came top with an overall score of 94.5 out of 100 and they were followed by Vodafone on a score of 92.9. Meanwhile O2 has improved but continues to come last.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has today announced that they’re aiming to “hook up” as many as 72 additional Scottish communities to their 4G network over the next 12 months, which should lift their indoor coverage of the service to reach 94.6% of Scotland.

The Welsh Economy, Infrastructure and Skills Committee has warned that Mobile coverage in Wales “consistently lags behind the rest of the UK,” which could hamper the roll-out of future Gigabit capable 5G services unless changes are made (e.g. allowing 30m tall masts, stricter coverage requirements and more engagement).

Mobile operators Vodafone and O2 have today announced a tentative agreement that will see their current UK network sharing deal being extended to include future 5G (mobile broadband) services. On top of that they’re also exploring the prospect of delivering a “shared, future proof fibre” (fibre optic) transmission network.

The final study of 2018 from crowd-sourced data analysis company Tutela has revealed that EE beat Vodafone, O2 and Three UK to be named as the fastest overall Mobile Broadband operator in the country for 4G services. Meanwhile Three UK managed to top the table for older 3G networks.

Northumberland-based Trench Networks (TN), which has developed a clever device that aggregates the 3G and 4G mobile signals from multiple UK operators in order to deliver superfast broadband speeds at remote sites, has secured an investment of £300,000 from the North East Venture Fund to help it grow.

The National Farmers Union has published the results from its latest online and telephone based survey of 812 members, which found that just 16% of farmers had access to “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) speeds (up from 4% in 2015) and only 17% have a “reliable” outdoor mobile signal. But the situation has improved.

New customers of cable operator Virgin Media’s mobile division (Virgin Mobile) can until 31st January 2019 buy a specially discounted 4G SIM-Only plan, which features unlimited calls, unlimited texts and 120GB of data (mobile broadband) for just £20 per month on a 12 month contract term.

Real estate company Strutt & Parker has suggested that UK farmers, many of which aren’t exactly swimming in lots of spare cash, should consider investing to build their own “private” broadband networks instead of waiting for whatever the Government’s 10Mbps+ Universal Service Obligation (USO) will deliver.

A new report from Global Wireless Solutions has noted that mobile operators (O2, EE, Vodafone and Three UK) have “turbo boosted” their 4G coverage across major motorways in the UK since 2017, with the M6 seeing double what it had over a year and a half ago.

Mobile operators EE and Vodafone have come top in P3‘s annual 2018 UK Mobile Network Study, which used a range of different benchmarks to test 3G and 4G (voice and data / broadband) covering some 26% of the population in 22 cities, 35 towns and along 7,300 miles of major roads.

The UK telecoms regulator has moved to improve 4G and future 5G mobile coverage by setting out their plans for “spectrum sharing” in the 1800MHz, 2300MHz and 3.8-4.2GHz bands, as well as finalising new coverage obligations for next year’s auction of the 700MHz band. The 3.6GHz – 3.8GHz bands will also be auctioned.

Ofcom has granted a small but controversial change to the part of the 3.6GHz band owned by mobile operator Three UK (H3G, UK Broadband Ltd.), which will give them access to a 100MHz block of contiguous spectrum that may result in faster 5G based mobile and fixed wireless networks. But BT, O2 and Vodafone aren’t happy.
