Mobile operator EE (BT) has today named the first UK cities to benefit from their commercial roll-out of ultrafast multi-Gigabit capable 5G mobile and wireless home broadband technology, which is due to begin later next year. Naturally London, Cardiff, Edinburgh and Belfast are on the list.

Ofcom has today announced that they will be imminently releasing more radio spectrum in the licence exempt 57-71GHz bands, which they suggest could be used to help deliver fixed wireless broadband and 5G style connections at potentially “fibre-like speeds“.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica UK) has signed a new collaboration agreement with the Wireless Infrastructure Group (WIG), which will support the development of what is expected to be “Europe’s largest fibre connected small cell network” and trials of driverless vehicles using 5G tech in the West Midlands.

Mobile operator Three UK has today announced that they’ve adopted the LTE-Advanced based Carrier Aggregation (CA) technology, which will enable them to combine several radio spectrum bands in order to boost 4G (Mobile Broadband) speeds for their customers. Sadly the initial coverage is limited.

The Government’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond MP, has today set out his autumn 2018 budget and confirmed that he will inject an “additional” £200m+ to help “full fibre” broadband ISP networks reach rural areas. He also set out policy proposals to encourage FTTP for new build homes and existing apartments.

Mobile operator O2 (Telefonica) has announced that they will invest in a further expansion of their 4G (Mobile Broadband) network coverage to reach 339 extra rural communities (defined as an area with a population of 100+) across the United Kingdom by the end of 2018, which could benefit 250,000 residents.

Vodafone today claims to have become the “first to switch on” a full 5G service over a commercial network in Salford, Greater Manchester. This will be followed by roll-outs in Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Liverpool and London by December 2018. Cornwall, the Lake District and Scottish Highlands will follow.

Vodafone has been named by crowd-sourced testing company OpenSignal as the best Mobile Network Operator in the United Kingdom for streaming video over a data (3G / 4G mobile broadband) connection, although they were very closely followed by arch rival EE (BT).

Broadband slow-spots in several remote parts of the Orkney islands (Scotland) could soon gain access to superfast broadband download speeds of up to 70Mbps (20Mbps upload) as part of the 5G based “RuralFirst” project, which earlier this year (here) was awarded a public grant worth £4.3m to help test the new wireless tech.

Mobile operator Three UK has had one of its website adverts banned for “misleadingly” claiming that customers could “Roam the world in 71 destinations at no extra cost,” which is despite still imposing a “fair use limit” of 12-13GB on Mobile Broadband (3G, 4G) data usage.

Ofcom has published the technical advice that they supplied to the government on improving rail passengers’ access to mobile data services (mobile broadband via 3G, 4G or 5G), which identifies some useful spectrum bands and estimates that by 2025 the busiest trains may need to be fed by 1.7Gbps to 3.6Gbps of capacity.

A new cross-party report has warned that there is “no silver bullet for how to improve rural mobile coverage” in the United Kingdom, but it has recommended five ways in which the Government could boost 4G network coverage enough to help achieve or beat the current target for 95% geographic coverage by 2022.

The on-going effort to improve rural superfast broadband and mobile network coverage has taken another twist after the UK Government’s Digital Minister, Margot James MP, said it was an “outrage” that some telecoms operators were slashing rents on their infrastructure to “derisory” low levels.
