The annual 2017 Communications Market Report (CMR) has today been published, which reveals the latest information about the take-up and impact of Broadband, Mobile, Phone, TV and Radio services across the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland).

The UK telecoms regulator has launched a Call for Inputs that seeks feedback on their proposal to harness the 26GHz radio spectrum band for future 5G based fixed wireless and Mobile Broadband technologies. Ofcom has also confirmed their intention to use the 3.6GHz to 3.8GHz band.

The latest H1 2017 report from RootMetrics has revealed the 4G mobile performance and availability of O2, Three UK, Vodafone and EE across England, Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland. Overall EE takes the crown for Mobile Broadband speed and coverage, while Three UK won for reliability and calls.

Wireless infrastructure builder Arqiva and Samsung have confirmed that London’s first trial of an ultrafast 5G based Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) broadband network, which uses the 28GHz millimetre wave radio spectrum band to offer multi-Gigabit speeds, has gone live in London.

Mobile operator O2 UK has admitted that they are throttling internet data traffic on their 3G (Mobile Broadband) connections for pay monthly contract customers who go roaming around the European Union. Some operators also struggled to deliver a good 4G connection while abroad.

The UK Government’s Wales Office Minister, Guto Bebb, has once again repeated the same call he made last year (here) for the Welsh Government to hurry up and update their planning system in order to help close the country’s remaining Mobile signal “not spots” in rural areas.

A new survey conducted by the National Farmers Union with 800 farmers across the United Kingdom has found that just 6% have access to “superfast” broadband download speeds and 85% have an “unreliable” outdoor mobile phone signal.

Mobile operator EE has extended its partnership with supermarket giant Sainsbury’s by announcing a plan to setup 100 new “stores” (700 overall), which will foster some 400 new retail jobs by the end of 2019 and “provide 95% of people with access to an EE store within 20 minutes’ drive.”

The total number of world fixed broadband subscribers grew by 2.36% during Q1 2017 and now stands at 875.1 Million (up from 812.7 Million one year ago). Some 71% of all net additions in Q1 came from East Asia (mostly China), but only 16.62% came from the more mature market of Europe.

After various delays and a bizarre campaign (here), Ofcom has today set out the final rules and caps for their auction of radio spectrum in the 2.3GHz and 3.4GHz bands, which will help mobile operators to launch “very fast” Mobile Broadband (4G and 5G) services by 2020.

The Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport (DCMS) has awarded £16 million to three Universities (King’s College London and the Universities of Surrey and Bristol) in order to trial and demo the United Kingdom’s first end-to-end 5G Mobile network in 2018.

Customers on almost all of Three UK’s “Advanced” 4G Mobile plans (i.e. those with a data allowance of 4GB or more) can now benefit from the operator’s new “Go Binge” service, which provides “unlimited data … for streaming video and music” from Netflix, Deezer, Soundcloud and TVPlayer.

Mobile operator EE only recently began to roll-out their new 400Mbps+ capable Category 16 based 4G+ (LTE-Advanced) Mobile Broadband technology (here) and now they’ve taken it to another level by demonstrating downloads of up to 765Mbps (110Mbps upload) at Wembley Stadium.

Wireless infrastructure giant Arqiva has acquired a key slice of 28GHz radio spectrum from business ISP Luminet, which reflects a Region A licence for 2 x 112MHz that covers Central and Greater London. The move will help the company to trial a 5G based fixed wireless broadband network.

The Satellite and Terrestrial Network for 5G (SaT5G) project, which is supported by 16 major operators like BT, Avanti, SES etc. and £7.3 million (€8.3m) via the EU’s Horizon 2020 5G Research & Innovation contract, has begun work to integrate Satellite and future 5G Mobile networks.

Mobile operator Vodafone has signed a new deal with Ericsson to upgrade their 4G network in London and Southern England by installing the latest LTE-Advanced based Carrier Aggregation (CA) and Massive MIMO technologies, which should boost Mobile Broadband speeds.

Ofcom has used crowd-sourced data collected from 4,288 users of their Smartphone app to reveal that 72% of users in UK urban areas were satisfied with their overall mobile service, although this falls to just 56% in rural areas. Elsewhere WiFi gave the best YouTube speed (average of 6.6Mbps).
