British space company OneWeb has just conducted the first live test of their new compact ultrafast broadband satellites in circular Low Earth Orbit (LEO), which achieved top data speeds of up to 400Mbps and a latency time of under 40 milliseconds (very impressive for a space based comms technology).

SpaceX has this morning completed the first successful launch and delivery of 60 small Starlink Satellites, which are Low Earth Orbit (LEO) dwelling spacecraft that could in theory deliver “ultrafast broadband” speeds of up to 1Gbps and low latency times of around 25ms (milliseconds) around the world. Many more will follow.

Internet retail giant Amazon has joined SpaceX, Facebook, Telesat and British registered OneWeb to become the latest company with an eye toward launching a new global “low-latency, high-speed” broadband network, which will be supported by a huge constellation of 3,236 small Satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).

European Satellite and Fixed Wireless ISP Bigblu has revealed that they’re planning to launch a new a “fibre like service from the sky,” which will start from the middle of 2020 with broadband speeds of up to 100Mbps and “unlimited data allowances” across the UK and several other European countries.

Some 57 properties in the isolated rural village of Drimnin (West Highlands, Scotland) can now access broadband speeds of up to 50Mbps. The new fixed wireless network reflects a community collaboration with Scottish Sea Farms, which has resulted in a new ISP being setup called Drimnin Community Broadband CIC.

Real estate company Strutt & Parker has suggested that UK farmers, many of which aren’t exactly swimming in lots of spare cash, should consider investing to build their own “private” broadband networks instead of waiting for whatever the Government’s 10Mbps+ Universal Service Obligation (USO) will deliver.

European Satellite ISP Bigblu has signed a new network capacity agreement with Eurobroadband Infrastructure (a Eutelsat subsidiary), which will enable them to launch a new “Konnect” branded package that offers faster download speeds of “up to” 50Mbps (6Mbps upload). But it’s not cheap.

Overall around 80% of subscriptions are now fibre optic (FTTH/B/C) and cable (DOCSIS) based, with older copper lines (ADSL) being cast toward the history books.

Avanti, which operates the HYLAS Satellite broadband network, has claimed that a lack of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) in the County of Cornwall (England) is “costing jobs and holding back new start-ups,” with an estimated 6,500 Cornish businesses allegedly still being stuck in the economic slow lane (Council figures).

After a long battle Comcast has today beaten off Rupert Murdoch’s 21st Century Fox and emerged as the victor in their bidding war for control of Sky (Sky Broadband). The US cable giant raised their final bid to £30bn for the pan-European TV and broadband company (£17.28 per share), while Fox offered £15.67 per share.
