Panasonic (Panasonic Avionics Corporation) has today signed a new deal with UK satellite operator Inmarsat, which will see the company deploying the “high-speed broadband” GX Aviation (Global Xpress) platform to deliver faster in-flight WiFi connectivity to the airlines (passengers) they serve.

A new survey of 9,300 Airline passengers from 32 countries, which was conducted by Populus for Satellite operator Inmarsat, has found that 55% now view inflight WiFi connectivity as “crucial“. Likewise 67% would consider rebooking to a different airline if it offered good wireless broadband.

European and UK satellite and fixed wireless operator Satellite Solutions Worldwide (Europasat) has re-branded to Bigblu Broadband Group PLC, although the operator remains focused on its niche market of the last 5% – 10% of rural customers in each country that are “unserved or underserved by fibre broadband“.

Rocket company SpaceX will on Saturday launch a pair of small Low Earth Orbit (LEO) test satellites for their proposed Starlink service, which could in theory deliver ultrafast broadband speeds of up to 1Gbps and low latency times of just 25-35ms (milliseconds) across the world.

The prospect of superfast in-flight broadband, across the UK and EU, took a big step forward this week after Inmarsat confirmed that they had completed their new European Aviation Network (EAN), which mixes a new multi-beam S-band Satellite with 300 ground-based 4G (LTE) stations.

London-based Satellite ISP Avanti Communications has appointed Kyle Whitehill to be its new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The move comes ahead of their planned March 2018 launch of the new HYLAS 4 spacecraft that will offer “cost-effective and high-speed broadband” across Africa and Europe.

The total number of world fixed broadband subscribers grew by 2.38% in Q3 2017 and now stands at 913.3 Million (up by nearly 70 million over the past year). Meanwhile the number of copper lines (ADSL etc.) fell by 6.3% over the past year and “full fibre” FTTH/P connections increased by 30.4%.

After a final consultation (here) the Government has today revealed its chosen path for implementing a new legally-binding Universal Service Obligation (USO), which promises a minimum broadband download speed of 10Mbps (1Mbps upload) for all by 2020 and rejects BT’s £600m voluntary proposal.

A new study published by the European Commission has found that Satellite based broadband connectivity is an “efficient option” for bringing faster internet connectivity to “poorly connected” schools. A voucher scheme is proposed to help support related deployments.
