Deploying a new ultrafast (940Mbps capable) fibre optic broadband network in urban areas is never easy, as demonstrated by Cityfibre’s joint roll-out of a new Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) service with Sky Broadband and TalkTalk in York where some areas could need corrective work.

Sky Broadband appears to have quietly unveiled the pricing for their forthcoming “Sky Ultra Fibre Optic” service in the city of York (England), where they’re working alongside Cityfibre and TalkTalk to roll-out a new 940Mbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) network. Oddly, line rental still exists.

Comparison site Simplifydigital.co.uk has today unveiled the winners of their 2015 Customer Choice Awards, which saw most of the big broadband ISPs (except BT and EE) pickup wins across several broadband, phone and TV categories based on their levels of satisfaction. UK ISP Sky Broadband has announced that their unlimited ‘up to’ 17Mbps standard broadband package, which is currently being offered for free for a whole year (£10 per month thereafter), will now also come with the option of a £100 M&S or Tesco e-voucher, pre-paid MasterCard or a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 computer.

Sky Broadband is holding its own against increasing pressure from BT and this is demonstrated by their Q2 2015 results reporting another +96,000 increase in Internet subscribers for the UK and Ireland (total 5.62 million), which is only a small dip from the +100k added in Q1 2015 and +106k in Q4-2014.

A row over competition in the UK market for Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) services has erupted after broadband ISP TalkTalk accused Vodafone of “withdrawing entirely from the MVNO market“, which would seriously limit the choices for BT and EE’s rivals when hunting for an alternative supplier.

The Government is nearly ready to join with Rights Holders and four of the country’s largest broadband ISPs to kick off a major “multi-media education campaign“, which will encourage Internet users to “do the right thing” and use legal services instead of piracy. Warning letters (email alerts) will also be sent to some broadband subscribers.
