UK ISP Sky Broadband has announced that their unlimited ‘up to’ 17Mbps standard broadband package, which is currently being offered for free for a whole year (£10 per month thereafter), will now also come with the option of a £100 M&S or Tesco e-voucher, pre-paid MasterCard or a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 computer.

Sky Broadband is holding its own against increasing pressure from BT and this is demonstrated by their Q2 2015 results reporting another +96,000 increase in Internet subscribers for the UK and Ireland (total 5.62 million), which is only a small dip from the +100k added in Q1 2015 and +106k in Q4-2014.

A row over competition in the UK market for Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) services has erupted after broadband ISP TalkTalk accused Vodafone of “withdrawing entirely from the MVNO market“, which would seriously limit the choices for BT and EE’s rivals when hunting for an alternative supplier.

On 29th July Microsoft will release its new Windows 10 operating system software, which is being offered as a free upgrade to millions of existing Windows customers around the world. But broadband ISPs are nervous about the impact that so many subscribers downloading the 3GB+ (GigaByte) update could have on their networks.

The Government is nearly ready to join with Rights Holders and four of the country’s largest broadband ISPs to kick off a major “multi-media education campaign“, which will encourage Internet users to “do the right thing” and use legal services instead of piracy. Warning letters (email alerts) will also be sent to some broadband subscribers.

A new report claims that around 7 out of 10 Sky Broadband customers have enabled the ISPs network-level filtering (Parental Controls), which was enforcedly introduced last year by all of the largest broadband ISPs to help block “adult content” from young eyes. Sadly it doesn’t always work as intended.

The CEO of BT’s Consumer Division, John Petter, has today hit back at Sky (Sky Broadband) for calling on Ofcom to launch a competition review of the operators BTOpenreach division. BT has now similarly demanded that the regulator include Pay TV into its Digital Communications Review and tackle Sky’s “dominance“.

Customers of Sky Broadband have until now been able to get free UK weekend calls alongside Sky Line Rental (£16.40 per month), thanks to the included Sky Talk Weekends option, yet it’s been noted to ISPreview.co.uk that this feature has vanished from Sky’s site only to be replaced by a new range of paid plans.

Customers taking the ‘up to’ 17Mbps capable Sky Broadband Unlimited package may be displeased to learn that its standard price, after being reduced from £10 to £7.50 per month for the past year, is to later this morning be increased back to its original level of £10.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has announced plans to create 400 new customer service jobs across the United Kingdom, with around 200 going to their contract centres in Scotland (100 at Uddingston, 50 in Livingston and 50 more at Dunfermline) and the rest to their bases in Newcastle and Stockport (England).

The communications regulator has today published their latest Q1-2015 consumer complaints report, which saw overall complaint volumes continue to fall across most of the major UK mobile, pay tv, fixed line phone and broadband sectors. But the news isn’t so good for EE, which has seen gripes surge.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has used the backdrop of Ofcom’s on-going strategic review of the UK’s digital communications market to formally demand that the national telecoms regulator launch a competition review of BTOpenreach, which manages BT’s underlying broadband and phone infrastructure.

Contractors who appear to be working for Sky (Sky Broadband) have been spotted building new telegraph poles and fibre optic cable ducting around the civil parish village of Woodville, Midway and the Swadlincote areas of Derbyshire in England. Some 5,000 local homes will benefit.
