Vague Results from Sky Reveal Confusing UK Broadband Performance

Sky Plc (Sky Broadband) has today released the first batch of consolidated Q4-2014 (calendar) results since they merged Sky Italia (Italy) and Sky Deutschland (Germany) into the fold last year. But unfortunately this appears to have come at the cost of any useful data on their broadband and phone operations in the United Kingdom.

MoneySuperMarket.com has today announced the winners of their Broadband Supers 2015 Awards, which much like last week’s uSwitch event saw almost all of the big broadband ISPs walk away with at least one award from a selection of several categories. Generally PlusNet appeared to do the best after it picked up three awards for Best Value Broadband, Best for Quality and Reliability and Best for Customer Service.

The annual uSwitch.com Broadband Awards 2015, which took place last night at The Gherkin in London, have unveiled a variety of winners across multiple categories for broadband, TV, phone and mobile services. Top among the winners was Virgin Media, which took three awards for Best Customer Rated Broadband, Fastest Broadband and Best Broadband Provider.

UK ISP Sky Broadband Confirms Quad Play Bundle with O2 Based Mobile

Sky (Sky Broadband) has today announced a new multi-year wholesale partnership with mobile operator Telefonica UK (O2) that will allow the ISP to offer a new range quad-play bundles to their customers, including 2G, 3G and 4G (Mobile Broadband) based mobile tariffs.

A new report claims that Sky (Sky Broadband) and TalkTalk have now both entered the ring as a possible merger or, more likely, collaboration partners for Telefonica’s British mobile network sibling, O2 UK. The news comes only a day after Three UK’s parent, Hutchison Whampoa, said that they were still in talks over a possible £9bn acquisition of O2.

Sky Broadband Shield Clarifies UK Adult Internet Filtering Policy

UK ISP Sky Broadband has today confirmed that their network-level filtering (Parental Control) services are now “rolling out” to all of their customers, which in Sky Shield’s case means that existing customers will now be given an option about whether or not to disable the filter and if they don’t make a decision then it will be enabled by default.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has upheld one part of a two part complaint made by Sky (Sky Broadband) against a website advert for BT Broadband’s free BTSport TV content, which was ruled “misleading” because it failed to sufficiently show that the cost of BTSport to Sky Digital (Satellite) customers would rise to £13.50 a month.

The Citizens Advice agency has called on the UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) to toughen up its rules after the CA felt it necessary to lodge four complaints against adverts for broadband and phone bundles from BT, Virgin Media, Sky Broadband and TalkTalk due to their allegedly “misleading” prices.

The United Kingdom’s communications regulator, Ofcom, has today published their annual study of consumer satisfaction with fixed line broadband, phone, pay TV and mobile providers, which is based on feedback received from around 6,000 consumers who were interviewed as part of the research. Overall it’s good news for Sky Broadband and Virgin Media, but less so for the others.
