UK High Court Forces Big ISPs to Block Websites for Trade Mark Abuse

The High Court of Justice in London has today ruled on a case that concerned the abuse of commercial Trade Marks. Crucially the outcome means that several of the United Kingdom’s largest broadband ISPs (BT, Sky Broadband, Virgin Media, EE and TalkTalk) can now also be forced to block websites that abuse company trademarks / logos, such as by dealing in counterfeit goods.

Customers of Sky Broadband’s service in the North West of England, particularly those who reside in and around the Liverpool and Manchester areas, have been hit by a major service outage this morning after the operator reported problems at multiple telephone exchanges in the region.

Growth Improves as Sky Broadband Reaches 5.32m UK Customers

After a predictable slowdown in the second quarter Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has today seen its growth improve in Q3-2014 by adding an extra +75,000 (up from +50k in Q2 and +70k in Q1) home broadband subscriptions to total 5,322,000, which has no doubt been helped by the recent spate of aggressive discounts (24 months free broadband etc.).

The UK Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has once again banned several adverts for Virgin Media’s various broadband, phone and TV bundles after BT and Sky Broadband (BSkyB) complained that the operator misrepresented the pricing and potential savings of its packages.

As expected Sky Broadband has started warning customers that the price they pay for phone line rental on their broadband bundles, which is currently set at £15.40 per month, is set to rise just like BT’s will on 1st December 2014.

UPD Rural vs Urban Gap Closing as Average Broadband Speeds Hit 18.7Mbps

Ofcom’s latest biannual report into the real-world speeds of fixed line broadband ISP consumers across the United Kingdom reveals that the Internet performance gap between rural and urban areas is still wide, yet their speeds are now improving at a faster rate (+20% rural vs +5% urban / suburban). Overall the average download rate has risen by just 5% to reach 18.7Mbps (up from 17.8Mbps in the last report).

UPD Virgin Media Stokes Feud with BT and Sky Over Premier League TV Costs

Cable operator Virgin Media has moved from its previously somewhat neutral stance, specifically in the conflict between BSkyB (Sky Broadband) and BT over Premier League TV rights, by lodging an official complaint with Ofcom and pleading for the comms regulator to help stop the costs of related content from getting out of control.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a TV, website and several press adverts for Virgin Media’s cable broadband service after rival ISPs, BT and Sky Broadband (BSkyB), complained that the promotions “misled” consumers by claiming the service offered Internet download speeds that were “5x faster than Sky and BT’s regular broadband“.

Sky Seeks Code Powers to Support New UK PIA and SLU Broadband Trials

Ofcom has proposed to grant Code Powers to BSkyB Ltd. (Sky Broadband) in order to both make it easier for them to maintain and develop their core fibre optic network (e.g. quicker approval for street works) and to support trials of new solutions, such as a Passive Infrastructure Access (PIA) and Sub-Loop Unbundling (SLU) related broadband services.

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has published the first responses to its latest Business Connectivity Market Review 2016 (BCMR2016) consultation and perhaps unsurprisingly it finds rivals including Vodafone, BSkyB (Sky Broadband), TalkTalk and Virgin Media all demanding greater access to BT’s cable ducts, dark fibre and leased lines.

Sky Broadband Unlimited Goes FREE for 12 Months and Tweaks Prices

UK ISP Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has today tweaked its standard unlimited broadband and phone bundle prices and begun offering the service free for the first 12 months of service (£7.50 thereafter). In addition, customers will get a £100 Marks & Spencers voucher or alternatively the option of a free Samsung GALAXY Tab 4 if they bundle in with a Sky TV service.
