Virgin Media UK in Growth Surge to Top 4.625 Million Broadband Users

Aside from today’s big network expansion news (here), Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has also announced its Q4-2014 results and confirmed that they added an impressive +64,000 broadband subscribers last quarter to total 4,625,800 (this compares with +37,600 added in Q3-2014 and a dismal -12,000 in Q2).

The FTTH Council Europe, which campaigns for the adoption of Fibre-to-the-Home (100Mbps+) ultrafast fibre optic broadband technology, has published its latest global ranking of FTTH/P/B progress and sadly, despite some good growth in the past year, the United Kingdom continues to be a no show.

Netradar Finds UK Mobile Internet Speeds Slower than Most of Europe

Measurements of mobile Internet speed taken during the course of last year by UK and EU users of the free Netradar.org app have shown that the United Kingdom scored an average download rate of 5Mbps (Megabits per second), which places us below France (8.4Mbps), Germany (6.1Mbps), Italy (5.4Mbps) and many others. In addition, Three UK delivered the fastest speeds for Britain.

Gov Helps Put 2 Million Extra UK Premises in Reach of Superfast Broadband

The Government’s £1.7bn state aid fuelled Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) project, which is predominantly working with BT in order to make fixed line superfast broadband (24Mbps+) connections available to 95% of people in the United Kingdom by 2017, has announced that its efforts have helped to put the service within reach of 2 million premises (total UK coverage of approximately 80%).

The Government’s national Broadband Delivery UK programme, which aims to make fixed line superfast broadband speeds (24Mbps+) available to 90% of the population by 2016 and 95% by 2017, has now made the service available to a total of 1,908,725 additional homes and businesses (premises passed for December 2014).

Vague Results from Sky Reveal Confusing UK Broadband Performance

Sky Plc (Sky Broadband) has today released the first batch of consolidated Q4-2014 (calendar) results since they merged Sky Italia (Italy) and Sky Deutschland (Germany) into the fold last year. But unfortunately this appears to have come at the cost of any useful data on their broadband and phone operations in the United Kingdom.

UK Mobile Data Traffic Tops 0.9 ExaBytes in 2014 as Avg Speeds Hit 2.5Mb

Cisco has today published their annual Global Mobile Data Traffic Forecast (2014 – 2019), which reported that mobile data traffic in the United Kingdom reached 74.2 PetaBytes (PB) per month in 2014 (0.9 Exabytes per year) and this will rise to 634.4PB by 2019 (7.6 Exabytes per year). Internet video traffic continues to be the main driver.

UK ISP TalkTalk Tops 4.236M Broadband Subscribers and Sells Off-Net Base

Low cost ISP TalkTalk has today published their latest results for Q4-2014 (calendar), which reported that broadband subscribers increased at the stable rate of +15K (same as in Q3) in the quarter to total 4,236,000 and “Superfast Fibre Broadband” (FTTC) surged forward by +88K (up from +67K in Q3) to account for 396,000 of that total.

ISPr Survey – Broadband Helping Two Thirds of People to Remote Work

More and more people across the United Kingdom appear to be taking part in remote working (online). According to our latest monthly survey of 1,095 readers, some 67.6% of respondents said they now remote work from home or while commuting to their day job (32.3% said they don’t remote work at all) and access to better broadband is almost certainly helping the trend.

BT Top 7.59m Broadband Subscribers and Grow FTTC to Cover 22M Premises

BT has today published its latest results for Q4-2014 (calendar), which revealed that their retail division had added +119,000 broadband subscribers in the quarter to total 7,592,000 (up from the +88k added in Q3 and the +104k in Q2). Meanwhile almost 22 million UK premises can now access the operators “Fibre Broadband” (FTTC/P) network.

Small Improvement in UK Satisfaction with Broadband and Phone Services

Ofcom has published its annual Consumer Experience Report, which shows that satisfaction with fixed line broadband ISP and phone service reliability has ever so slightly improved over the past year. But the proportion who were dissatisfied with their service remains at 9% for broadband customers, 6% of mobile users, 4% of landline callers and 4% of TV viewers.

London 4G Wireless ISP Relish Says Brits Underestimate Landline Costs

Relish, a London-based and focused 4G fixed wireless superfast broadband ISP, has continued to highlight the high cost of landline phone rental by claiming that 30% of UK adults do not know how much they are spending on their landline and estimate their monthly expenditure at £11.39 (well below the £16.77 average of the big ISPs).

YouGov Find UK Support for Tougher State Internet Snooping Law is Split

A new YouGov survey of 1,647 adults across Great Britain, which was conducted at the end of last week, has indicated that 53% of people support calls for a tougher Internet Snooping law that would log and supply more of your private communications data (e.g. email, website, Skype access logs etc.) to the security services. But happily most oppose the recent calls for a ban on encryption.

The Centre for Cities, which claims to be a non-partisan / independent think-tank that dedicates itself towards understanding and improving city economies, has published its annual 2015 Cities Outlook report to reveal the United Kingdom’s best and worst performing cities across various criteria. One of the criteria they judge is superfast broadband penetration.

UPDATE FSB Claim Half of Rural Small Businesses Dissatisfied with Broadband

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has today warned of a “two-speed digital economy” after it published the results of new research, which found that 49% of rural small businesses are dissatisfied with the quality of their broadband service and this falls away significantly to just 28% for similar firms based in urban areas.
