Over the past few months some customers of BT’s broadband service have been contacting ISPreview.co.uk to highlight an unusual issue, which causes high ping (latency / lag) spikes while playing online video games at the same time as somebody is also streaming a video (Netflix, YouTube, Twitch, Sky on Demand etc.).

Cable TV and broadband ISP Virgin Media UK has confirmed that Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service is now live on their Ultra HD (4K) Virgin TV V6 set-top-box (i.e. it’s today been automatically downloaded). As usual you’ll still need a subscription to Prime (from £5.99 per month) to watch the content itself.

Mobile operator and ISP EE will today replace their ageing bespoke Pay TV (IPTV) product, which was only available alongside their fixed line home broadband and phone packages, with a new service powered by an Apple TV 4K set-top-box, but it won’t be a particularly cheap add-on.

Customers of UK broadband ISP BT may be interested to know that they’ve increased the amount of devices able to harness their new UltraHD 4K High Dynamic Range (HDR) video streaming quality on the BTSport TV App for mobile, tablet and large screen devices, which is a service feature that has been in trial since early 2019.

Mobile operator EE has announced that their Video Data Pass add-on, which allows UK customers of their 4G and 5G based mobile broadband network to stream online video without it reducing their monthly data allowance, has now added support for both the BBC’s iPlayer service and YouTube.

Telecoms and broadband ISP BT is reportedly involved in talks that could see them provide millions of extra funding to support the UK launch of a new internet video streaming service, Britbox, which is backed by the BBC and ITV (broadcasters); this is currently only available to consumers in the USA and Canada.

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk has today followed Virgin Media by announcing that Amazon’s Prime Video streaming service will also be coming to their YouView (IPTV) powered Pay TV platform. The Prime Video app is being rolled out on set-top-boxes over the course of this month.

Full fibre (FTTP) builder Cityfibre has used a new survey of 1,005 “serious” online gamers (multiplayer) as ammunition to criticise older copper based broadband (ADSL) and hybrid fibre (FTTC etc.) ISPs, which they complain have plagued users with connectivity issues (“too much lag“) and slow download speeds.
