Having a slow broadband connection is no fun if you enjoy Internet video streaming, but fear not because the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has begun work on a future video coding standard that could “double the video compression capability” (i.e. better quality video for less speed).

The latest Q4 2016 (calendar) results from Vodafone UK reveal that their fixed line broadband base has grown by +16,000 in the quarter (sharply down from +30K in Q3) to total 183,000 customers and outdoor 4G coverage now stands at 97% (Ofcom’s definition). But still no sign of their Pay TV service.

The Senior Product Manager for TV at TalkTalk, Davide Turi, has revealed that broadband ISP TalkTalk is working on a “completely new” TV product that appears to be aimed at mobile devices (Smartphones, Tablets etc.). Turi recently joined the ISP after working at Sky on their Sky Q TV platform.

Sky has today published their latest results to 31st December 2016, which reveals that in the last six months they’ve added +140,000 new Sky Broadband subscribers in the UK and Ireland to total 6.1 million (up from +70K added in H1 2016). Plus you’ll soon be able to get Sky Q TV via broadband.

Netflix UK’s most recent ISP Speed Index update, which measures the popular Internet Movie and TV service’s video streaming performance on different broadband providers, has one again named Virgin Media as the fastest provider for their service in 2016; but it’s not that important to be top.

Telecoms giant Vodafone UK has today released their latest quarterly results (calendar Q3 2016), which saw their fixed line broadband customers grow once again to total 167,000 (up by +30K in Q3 vs +28K in Q2) and UK 4G outdoor coverage increase to 92% (or 96% by Ofcom’s definition).

UK ISP BT has announced that customers of their Youview based TV (IPTV) service will soon benefit from a major free upgrade, which will introduce a new “image-rich” user interface (UI) that should also make it easier to access channels / on-demand content and many other things.

The Motion Picture Association of Europe (MPA) has once again convinced the High Court to force all of the United Kingdom’s largest broadband ISPs to block access to 13 extra websites, which were all found to facilitate Internet copyright infringement (piracy).

BT are rumoured to be mooting the acquisition of broadband based Video-on-Demand and Catch-Up TV (IPTV) platform, YouView, which underpins both their Pay TV service and that of several other ISPs (TalkTalk, JT etc.). A figure of around £60m is currently being mooted (up from a starting offer of £20m).
