Customers Virgin Media, specifically those who take one of their cable broadband and TV bundles with a TiVo set-top-box, may be pleased to know that the provider has today begun to roll-out a new firmware update for its kit that adds new features to help search, find and save content on the service.

Ofcom’s long running probe into the rising cost of Premier League TV rights (football, rugby etc.), which was started by Virgin Media in 2014 and followed frustration over the impact of a bidding war between BT and Sky (Sky Broadband), has today been closed. But a few positive tweaks are coming.

Sky has today published their latest Q2 2016 (calendar) results, which reveals that they added +24,000 new Sky Broadband subscribers in the UK and Ireland during the quarter to total 5.964 million (sharply down from +46K in Q1 and +144K in Q4 2015). But the operator still has a lot to celebrate.

Vodafone has posted their latest results to 30th June 2016 (Q2 calendar), which shows that they added +28,000 new fixed line broadband customers in the quarter to total 137,000 (up from the +20k added in Q1 and +14k in Q4 2015) and improved their UK outdoor 4G cover to 95% (Ofcom’s definition).

Sky (Sky Broadband) has finally confirmed that their new Sky Q range of TV, phone and broadband bundles will from 13th August 2016 finally be able to benefit from Ultra HD (4K) TV content, which will apparently deliver the “UK’s most comprehensive Ultra HD service.”

A few months ago Sky UK (Sky Broadband) won a WIPO domain name dispute against a website (Skysportslive.**) that was streaming their TV content without permission. But despite taking ownership Sky has not shut it down and the domain continues to offer links to pirated streams. Awkward.

New and existing customers of EE’s pay monthly and SIM-only mobile plans can now benefit from 6 months of free access to the BTSport TV app (£5 a month thereafter), which is no doubt a benefit that has been extracted from the recent £12.5bn merger between the two. Just watch your data usage.

Mobile operator EE reports that Internet video streaming traffic over their 3G and 4G network surged during yesterday’s UEFA Euro 2016 football matches, which kicked off at 8pm and saw two games featuring UK teams; both played during the same 2 hour window (England v Slovakia and Wales v Russia).
