BT has today won four years’ worth of exclusive live TV broadcasting rights for Aviva Premiership Rugby and the J.P. Morgan Asset Management Sevens from the 2013-14 season, which will be shown over its broadband IPTV service (BTVision) and could be seen as yet another challenge to Sky (Sky Broadband) and ESPN’s dominance of TV sport.

Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s has announced its intention to join the likes of LOVEFiLM with the forthcoming launch of their new broadband internet video streaming based movie and TV distribution service, which will offer a mix of video-on-demand rentals and full downloads.

ISP BT Retail fears that it might have to “write off our investment” in OnLive’s UK cloud based video gaming service, which allows customers to play the latest PC, XBox 360 and PS3 video games, without owning them directly, by using a live and remotely controlled internet video stream over your broadband connection.

Broadband ISP PlusNet UK has revealed that internet streaming services (e.g. YouTube) now account for over 42% of all usage on its network during the evening and often peak at 50-60% depending on what’s happening (i.e. big sporting events). A raft of other stats have also been published including some that hint at a possible abuse of the SkyGo service.

Californian-based technology firm Blue Coat Systems has predicted that 30-60% of internet traffic will be turned into “wasted bandwidth” as workers go online to watch the London 2012 Olympic Games via various video streaming services, which it fears could put ISP networks and productivity at risk.

Business ISP Fluidata reports that last week’s annual Wimbledon tennis tournament in London (England) caused the highest increase in office internet traffic witnessed on their broadband network for any sporting event over the past three years, mostly as a result of video streaming (e.g. iPlayer) by day workers.

The UK government’s Cabinet Office, which in February 2012 controversially warned that broadband ISP “services may be slower during the [London 2012 Olympic Games] or in very severe cases there may be drop outs” (guidance pdf), has now reversed its warning and said that it does not expect any impact upon the UK internet infrastructure.

The YouView (Project Canvas) IPTV product, a subscription free, broadband internet based, video-on-demand and catch-up TV service that will be bundled by several big ISPs, has today confirmed that it will be available through major retailers by the end of July 2012. TalkTalk has also pledged to reveal its related bundle at a Strategy Day for investors on 26 July.
