Customers of Virgin Media appear to have had another mixed weekend after some were hit with yet more connection problems on their ntlworld.com email addresses, while others were forced to suffer an unexpected spate of “buffering” issues when attempting to watch video streams on the popular YouTube (Google) website.

First came Apple TV, then Roku (inc. Sky’s NOW TV service) followed by Google’s Chromecast and now Amazon’s Fire TV box has arrived in the United Kingdom to help put your broadband ISP connection to good use by streaming video and TV content instead of just getting it via a Satellite or that ugly antenna at the top of your house.

At some point over the past few weeks somebody you know has probably poured a bucket of ice water over themselves (possibly for charity) and posted the video to Facebook. Unfortunately for Smartphone owners this phenomenon can have the unintended consequence of causing your Mobile Broadband data bills to skyrocket, thanks largely to Facebook’s auto-play videos feature.

Sony has given broadband ISPs another set of data hogs to worry about after they confirmed that consumers in the United Kingdom would be the first in Europe to beta test their new PlayStation Now streaming service in 2015, while their PlayStation TV product (designed to take on Google Chromecast and NOW TV etc.) is expected to surface this autumn 2014.

Akamai, a content delivery network, has today published its latest State of the Internet report for Q1 2014 and revealed that average global broadband download speeds have increased by just 1.8% over the last quarter to 3.9Mbps (Megabits). Meanwhile the UK saw its performance rise by 5.5% to top 9.9Mbps, making us the 15th fastest country (down from 13th in Q4-2013), but most still aren’t ready for 4K video streams.

Broadband ISP PlusNet has posted a couple of interesting snapshots of Internet video streaming traffic during England’s dismal opening matches of the 2014 Football WorldCup in Brazil. Suffice to say, ITV Player traffic is hardly a blip next to the huge popularity of BBC’s iPlayer service.

The opening ceremony and first match for Brazil’s 2014 WordCup Football event, which began during the late evening hours on Thursday 12th June 2014, saw many broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom report a drop in Internet traffic as subscribers disconnected to visit the living room TV or local pub instead of video streaming.

Sony’s Internet data hungry PlayStation Now (PS Now) service, which uses Gaikai’s video streaming technology to help gamers remote-play video games without having to download them (similar to OnLive), is likely to launch in the United Kingdom first because of its “best in Europe” broadband ISP infrastructure and “strong gaming market“.

The growing importance of fast Internet access in the delivery of modern television content has been highlighted again after Sky (Sky Broadband) revealed that 50% of their 10.6 million TV customers in the United Kingdom had connected their Sky+HD set-top-box to broadband in order to benefit from on-demand and catch-up-tv content.

Modern televisions and set-top-boxes that have adopted the pan-European Hybrid Broadcast Broadband Television (HbbTV) specification, which supports Internet capable features like digital teletext, catch-up TV (IPTV), electronic programme guides, interactive advertising, games and more, could be vulnerable to a simple radio attack by hackers.

Telecoms giant Ericsson has today published its annual Mobility Report, which reveals that Internet video services will grow to account for more than 50% of mobile data traffic in 2019 (up from around 40% today) and 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband coverage in Europe will reach 80% (currently 25%) by the same year. But 4G uptake could struggle.

Customers adopting one of BT’s triple-play broadband, TV and phone bundles have now been given the option of adding a second YouView (IPTV) set-top-box, for use in different rooms, to their service. But unlike the primary box, which is usually included at no extra cost, the second one won’t be free and you’ll need BTInfinity (FTTC).
