The Connected Nations 2017 report has today been published by Ofcom, which reveals a huge rise in the availability of fixed line 300Mbps+ “ultrafast broadband” services to 36% of the UK (up from 2% last year). Elsewhere 4% (1.1 million premises) still cannot receive speeds of 10Mbps+ (down from 6%).

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has today determined that it is “not materially misleading” to describe broadband services that use fibre optic cables for only part of the connection to consumers’ homes (e.g. FTTC) as “fibre broadband“, much to the annoyance of UK MPs and critics.

The latest Q3 2017 (calendar) results from Virgin Media (Liberty Global) reveal that the operator has expanded their UK cable network to cover another 147,000 premises during the quarter, while broadband subscribers have risen to total 5,080,100 (up by +51.8K in Q3 vs +30.9K in Q2 and +80.7K in Q1).

Comparison site Cable has published the winners of a huge new ISP survey, which interviewed 16,753 UK broadband customers to identify the best providers via five categories (reliability, value for money, customer service, speed and switching). Virgin Media and Plusnet came top.

A survey of 1,709 UK telecoms customers in June to July 2017, which was conducted by Which?, found that 53% had experienced a “problem with their broadband” in the last year. Sadly customers of Virgin Media (61%), TalkTalk (60%), Sky Broadband (56%) and BT (54%) were “most likely” to suffer.

The dream of 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable Full Duplex DOCSIS 3.1 technology, which could one day be deployed on Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) based cable networks like Virgin Media, has taken another step forward after CableLabs completed the technology’s official specification.

Customers of mobile operator EE (BT) and its MVNO partners (e.g. Virgin Media) are reporting that they are unable to make voice calls after a major outage struck the network. The incident, which is cropping up across the United Kingdom, appears to have started just after 10am today and is on-going.

The latest independent data to September 2017 has estimated that “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) capable fixed line networks now cover 93.9% of premises in the United Kingdom (96.6% if you include all “fibre based” lines of any speed inc. sub-24Mbps), with Wales and Scotland both touching completion.

New research has estimated that between 950,000 and 1.1 million premises, which were already being catered for by Virgin Media’s cable broadband network, have been overbuilt by networks (e.g. Openreach (BT)) supported through the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK project.
