Cable operator Virgin Media has today taken the surprise decision to introduce a new range of broadband products with 1 month rolling contracts, which includes standalone services as well as their various other service bundles with phone and TV etc.

Cable and fibre optic provider Virgin Media has announced that an additional 38,000 homes and businesses in the city of Edinburgh (Scotland) will soon be put within reach of their 300Mbps capable broadband and TV services, which forms part of their £3bn ‘Project Lightning’ network expansion.

The annual Broadband Genie 2017 survey has today handed their award for “Best Broadband Provider” to Plusnet after they came top in five out of seven categories and secured a consumer satisfaction score of 74%. Elsewhere Virgin Media also picked up several awards.

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has published their latest results to the end of 2016 (Q4), which saw their broadband base grow by +48.8K in the quarter (down from +59.9K in Q3) to total 4,916,700 customers. Some 215,000 extra premises have also been added to their network coverage.

The Chief Architect of Slovenian telecoms technology provider Iskratel, Simon Cimzar, has warned that DOCSIS based Hybrid Fibre Coax (HFC) networks (e.g. Virgin Media) need to “look past the latest cable upgrades” (DOCSIS 3.1) and go directly to Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P).

Cable operator Virgin Media appears to be quietly tweaking the ‘Max Traffic Rate‘ (speed profile) for some of their broadband packages, which for example means that those with their 300Mbps HomeWorks+ add-on may theoretically be able to achieve 345Mbps (its old profile was 330Mbps).

Cable operator Virgin Media has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that they’ve just begun a limited deployment of Voice-over-IP (VoIP) technology to replace their old phone (line rental) service, but it’s currently only being sold in areas where the operator has deployed Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) technology.
