The Government’s Valuation Office Agency (VOA) has published its proposed non-domestic business rates this morning, which has caused cable operator Virgin Media to warn that it will hamper the laying of new broadband infrastructure by forcing a “steep increase” in related costs (aka – Fibre Tax).

Good news, Ofcom’s latest Q2 2016 consumer complaints report finds that the total volume of UK Telecoms (mobile, broadband and phone) and Pay TV complaints has declined. Sadly some ISPs have fared better than others, with BT coming out top of the worst for fixed line home broadband.

Reports indicate that Virgin Media are likely to upgrade their top 200Mbps (VIVID 200) tier to 300Mbps (20Mbps upload), possibly at some point during this autumn, with the existing paid HomeWorks+ add-on also being boosted from 300Mbps to 350Mbps at the same time.

Fibre optic ISP Gigaclear has beaten both BT and Virgin Media by reaching a deal to bring 1Gbps “ultra-fast” broadband services to the rural village of Crazies Hill in Berkshire (England), which will also benefit the surrounding communities of Cockpole Green, Warren Row and Knowl Hill.

Cable operator Virgin Media has today reached a new agreement with UK property developer Redrow, which will initially result in more than 13,000 homes across Tamworth, Shrewsbury and Evesham gaining access to their 300Mbps capable broadband (HFC DOCSIS / FTTP) and TV network.

The spread of “ultra-fast” pure fibre optic broadband connections (FTTP/H) across the United Kingdom appears to have accelerated over the past year, with the latest estimate of premises passed delivering a total of 779,006 (up from 351,642 last year) and it’s set to reach around 4 million by 2020.

The on-going expansion of Virgin Media’s cable network, combined with rising data usage costs, new TV products and faster Internet speeds should perhaps reflect part of the reason why the operator has just revealed another round of annual price hikes, which will hit customers from 1st November 2016.
