The £1.9m UKB Networks contract to roll-out a new superfast (24Mbps+) wireless broadband network in North Swindon faces a big test tomorrow when a revised application for 4 new masts goes before the planning committee, but recent developments from BT and Virgin Media may complicate the vote.

UK ISPs EE, BT and TalkTalk have managed to collect the greatest proportion of consumer complaints for their fixed line broadband services, at least that’s one way of reading Ofcom’s Q1 2016 consumer complaints report. Meanwhile Virgin Media and Sky Broadband attracted the fewest gripes.

Several big UK broadband ISPs, including BT, Sky Broadband, EE, TalkTalk and Virgin Media, have lost an appeal against a 2014 ruling by the High Court, which extended court ordered website blocking to include sites that sell counterfeit goods (i.e. abuse of Trade Mark).

Broadband providers Virgin Media and Cityfibre have complained that a change to the Valuation Office Agency’s (VOA) business rates (charges) for their network assets (e.g. any fibre optic cables that they put into the ground) is hitting them with a massive Fibre Tax hike.

Earlier this month reports claimed (here) that cable operator Virgin Media were on the verge of announcing a major expansion of their 300Mbps broadband and TV network into parts of North Swindon (Wiltshire), where a state aid supported wireless network is deploying, and it’s now been confirmed that 7,000 premises will benefit.

Virgin Media has mirrored BT’s move from earlier this year (here) by signing a new partnership deal with the Home Builder’s Federation (HBF), which should make it easier to ensure that new build homes in England and Wales are prepared for the operator’s 300Mbps coax and fibre optic broadband network.

Cable operator Virgin Media has revealed that some 45,000 homes and businesses in Chester (Cheshire, England) and 24,000 in Wrexham (North Wales) will be among the next to gain access to their ‘up to’ 300Mbps broadband and TV bundles, which is part of their on-going £3bn Project Lightning network expansion.

Customers of Virgin Media’s mobile tariffs have been told to expect a price rise of 1.6% from 1st July 2016, which they say is in line with the Retail Price Index (RPI) rate of inflation announced in April when the figure was at its highest (it’s back to 1.3% now) and there are a few other increases too.
