As expected Virgin Media (Liberty Global), the national urban-focused UK cable operator, has today launched another “free” increase to their subscribers broadband speeds up to a maximum of 200Mbps (Megabits per second), but it’s not as much as had been expected and uploads remain unchanged.

Analyst firm IDATE recently updated its World FTTx Database, which provides for an interesting snapshot of the different fixed line technologies that countries around the world are using for “superfast broadband“. Suffice to say that Europe and the UK love hybrid-fibre (VDSL / FTTC).

The telecoms regulator has published its latest quarterly report into the volume of complaints experienced by all of the United Kingdom’s largest broadband, phone, mobile and TV providers. As usual the news is good for some providers (e.g. Sky Broadband, Virgin Media) and bad for others (e.g. EE).

Liberty Global, which owns cable operator Virgin Media as well as other ISPs (e.g. Ziggo, Telenet and UPC), has offered up the first look at their new “Connect Box” device (Virgin’s next combined broadband router and cable modem). The name may be changed in the UK to SuperHub v3.

Several major telecoms operators (Cityfibre, Virgin Media, euNetworks and Zayo) have joined forces to create the Infrastructure Investors Group (IIG) and they oppose the UK regulators move to open up access to BT’s Dark Fibre lines for rival providers. BT will be pleased.

The latest information on the availability of true ultrafast fibre optic broadband (FTTH/P/B) services, most of which are capable of delivering Gigabit class speeds (1000Mbps), has estimated that some 351,642 premises in the United Kingdom are now within reach of such a service (up from 251,522 last year).

Cable operator Virgin Media Business has today confirmed that 3,000 businesses in over 300 buildings will benefit from the on-going expansion of their ultrafast broadband network in Manchester, which is currently being deployed to 150,000 extra premises (mostly homes) in the city.

Apparently the end goal is to create a short film, which seems likely to form part of a PR exercise.

Customers of Virgin Media are receiving a new letter, which informs them that the cable operator will soon begin the rapid roll-out of a new broadband speed boost on 1st October 2015. This is likely to be another double-speed upgrade and that would push their top tier from 152Mbps to 300Mbps.

Comparison site Simplifydigital.co.uk has today unveiled the winners of their 2015 Customer Choice Awards, which saw most of the big broadband ISPs (except BT and EE) pickup wins across several broadband, phone and TV categories based on their levels of satisfaction. But sadly you won’t find any smaller ISPs listed.
