Fibre optic developer Cityfibre has signed a new £0.6m 10-year deal that will see their network in Hull (East Yorkshire, England) being expanded even further to reach 19 hub sites for local “fibre-over-wireless” broadband ISP Connexin.

Rural communities in Bath and Wells (Somerset, England) could soon be getting fasted broadband from wireless transceivers installed on top of local churches. The development follows a new deal between fixed wireless ISP Wild West Net and the Bath and Wells Diocese.

Last month we revealed that Virgin Media had begun to trial a new FON style technology that would turn their SuperHub cable broadband routers into public WiFi hotspots (full details). Today it’s being reported that they’ll soon be doing something similar with their huge network of UK street cabinets.

Vodafone has found a fix for some of the communities in their Rural Open Sure Signal (ROSS100) project, which until recently had been unable to benefit from the Femtocell tech (i.e. uses fixed line services to boost local mobile signals) because the related areas suffered from a lack of good fixed line broadband.

The Government has announced that tier 1 local authorities can now apply for a slice of £7.1 million in public funding, which is designed to help them ensure that all public libraries in England can offer free wireless (WiFi) Internet access to visitors by March 2016.
