Herefordshire-based Allpay Broadband has announced that it will begin withdrawing service from some rural areas because the local Government-backed Fastershire project, which is working with BT to deploy “fibre broadband” services to most of the county, is now achieving what it once set out to solve.

Worcester-based fixed wireless ISP Airband, which yesterday won a separate open market contract to deploy superfast broadband to 5,800 premises across the Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks in England (here), could form part of a consortium that will bid for the full Devon and Somerset contract after it failed to reach a deal with BT.

Rural ISP Wessex Internet (M12 Solutions), which deploys superfast wireless broadband (50Mbps) and some ultrafast (up to 1000Mbps) fibre optic services to premises in parts of North Dorset and South West Wiltshire (England), has reduced some of their charges and boosted usage allowances.

A new report from Juniper Research has predicted that Mobile Network Operators (MNO) will offload 60% of their Smartphone and Tablet based Mobile Broadband (3G, 4G) data traffic to WiFi networks by 2019 (equivalent to 115,000 Petabytes), which is up almost four-fold from 30,000PB this year.

Researchers working at the University of Washington appear to have become the first to harvest power using signals from home WiFi devices operating in the 2.4GHz radio spectrum band (note: an Asus RT-AC68U router was used for the demo), which allowed them to power several devices including a tiny camera.

The Lincolnshire County Council has rejected an alternative superfast broadband network proposal from a little known ISP called ionNET, which would have used its point-to-point and ‘up to’ 30Mbps capable wireless broadband network to reach rural parts that the local BT and Broadband Delivery UK programme might overlook.

The Connect8 campaign, which represents the residents of eight rural villages in southern Oxfordshire where BT have refused to upgrade (Howe Hill, Britwell Hill, Cookley Green, Greenfield, Park Corner, Pishill with Stonor, Russells Water and Swyncombe), looks set to adopt a fixed wireless broadband network to fix the problems.

The City of York in England has become the first in the world to achieve a new “Friendly Wi-Fi” accreditation (not hard to do because it’s only just been created in the UK), which means that their free public wireless Internet hotspots employ strict filtering (censorship) to block “inappropriate material” (porn and child abuse).
