Wireless ISP County Broadband has secured £200,000 worth of funding from the Colchester Borough Council and the new investment will be used to help serve local businesses, but sadly not homes, with access to superfast broadband speeds of greater than 30Mbps (Megabits per second).

Around 2,000 military and civilian personnel at RAF Northolt in London can now get online via a new WiFi Hotspot based wireless Internet access service after BT completed the installation of the new “high-speed” network via 480 access points today.

Around 70+ businesses on the Cardiff Gate International Business Park in Wales can now gain access to top broadband speeds of 1000Mbps after Welsh ISP Spectrum Internet expanded the reach of their fibre optic network into the area by using the city’s Connection Voucher scheme, which makes this the first such park to benefit in the whole of Wales.

Wessex Internet (M12 Solutions), which delivers 100Mbps fibre optic (FTTH) and 30-50Mbps wireless broadband services to premises in rural parts of North Dorset and South West Wiltshire in England, has expanded their radio network to reach homes and businesses in Tisbury.

The Tove Valley Broadband scheme (formerly Abthorpe Broadband Association) in Northamptonshire (England) has secured £123,000 of public funding from the Government’s Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), which will allow them to roll-out a 1000Mbps capable fibre optic network across several villages.

Mobile operator Three UK has signed an agreement with Virgin Media that will enable their customers to access the cable operators WiFi wireless Internet network at 137 London Underground stations for free, just as Vodafone, EE and O2 already can. The provider has also refreshed their SIM-Only plans with better Mobile Broadband allowances.

The National Parks England (NPE) and UK Mobile Operators Association (MOA) have reached a new “landmark agreement” that aims to boost the coverage of mobile phone and Mobile Broadband connectivity in protected rural areas, albeit while also “minimising any adverse environmental impacts” and working “proactively and pragmatically in order to achieve these aims“.

The Highland Perthshire Communities Partnership, a registered charity that has support from Atholl Estates and the Perth and Kinross Council in Scotland, has announced that it won’t wait for BT’s upgrade and instead plans to fill-in some of the regions broadband notspots and slowspots by building a new wireless network.

The new plan to roll-out a free wireless Internet (wifi hotspot) network across “scores of public areas” in Newcastle and Gateshead (North East England) could be at risk after it emerged that Spain-based GOWEX, which had been appointed to setup the new infrastructure, had falsified its accounts and filed for bankruptcy.

A new study commissioned by NETGEAR has surveyed 150 small and medium-sized hospitality and leisure venues across the UK, including 2,042 adults, to discover that 43% of hotels, B&Bs and theme parks etc. still think poor or non-existent WiFi Internet access is a price worth paying for a better experience in other areas. Most customers understandably disagreed.

In an odd twist the Government’s Department for Transport has said that a multi-million pound fine, which is being imposed upon state-owned Network Rail for missing performance targets (the penalty could be worth up to £70m), will be used to help fund a £90m investment into rolling out free superfast wifi Internet access on the busiest train routes.

The National Farmers Union (NFU), satellite broadband ISP Avonline and farming retailer Massey Ferguson have teamed up to modify two tractors, which will be positioned at key locations along Yorkshire’s (England) Tour de France route, to act as free wifi wireless Internet hotspots with a considerably wider than usual area of coverage.
