Year-Long Trial to Deliver FREE WiFi Across Central Cambridge City

The Cloud (BSkyB) has teamed up with the Connecting Cambridgeshire scheme (with help via the “Super-Connected Cities” funding) in order to roll-out free WiFi wireless Internet connectivity across the centre of Cambridge city in England, which means it will also be ready for when the Tour de France comes to the area on Monday 7th July.

Mobile operator Three UK has announced the forthcoming launch of a new App (‘Three inTouch‘) that will allow their customers to talk and text, using existing allowances, over a WiFi based wireless Internet connection, such as the one that most people have at home or even via a public hotspot connection.

EE to Conduct LIVE UK Trials of Voice Calls over WiFi and 4G Mobile

Mobile operator EE has announced, as part of their 2014 investment of £275m to improve phone calls, that it will soon conduct one of the United Kingdom’s first trials of Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE / 4G) tech using the 800MHz band (this will also benefit rural areas) and a similar trial using WiFi (native SMS/TXT services will also available through WiFi).

Virgin Trains Promise FREE “Superfast” WiFi for all Customers

Virgin Trains has today pledged to provide free “superfast” WiFi wireless Internet access “for all customers” after signing a major new deal for the West Coast franchise with the Government’s Department for Transport (DfT), which will run from 22nd June 2014 until March 2017.

The communications regulator has given preliminary approval to a proposal by the sibling of Hong Kong telecoms giant PCCW (HKT) and parent to London-based wireless ISP Relish, UK Broadband Limited, which is seeking an indefinite extension to its existing licence for radio spectrum within the 3.4GHz band.

Survey – Public WiFi Hurt by Security Fears and Fiddly Signup Forms

A new survey of 827 ISPreview.co.uk readers has found that 63.3% of respondents would rather use Mobile Broadband (3G / 4G) than a public WiFi hotspot (26.1%) to go online when out and about, while 10.5% said they don’t use either. Apparently the key reasons for this are due to fears over weak wifi security and the fiddly sign-up forms.

The forthcoming 2015 launch of the new 802.11ac-2013 WiFi WLAN wireless home networking standard (here), which promises speeds of up to 7Gbps (Gigabits per second), hasn’t even happened yet and Huawei are already overshadowing it with plans to introduce a 10Gbps standard (802.11ax) during 2018.

RBS and NatWest Respond to HSBC by Adding FREE WiFi to their UK Banks

Banking giants RBS and NatWest have confirmed that all of their customers will be able to access a free wireless Internet (wifi) service, which is already active in over 800 of the bank’s branches across the United Kingdom, by the end of the summer 2014 when almost 1,200 additional branches will have free WiFi installed.

Banking giant HSBC has put out a short announcement today to confirm that over 650 of its branches across the UK are now able to offer customers free wireless Internet (wifi) access, which is thanks to the installation of a premium BT Wi-fi network.
