But rural areas still have a long way to go.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/thinkbroadband\" target=\"_blank\">Thinkbroadband<\/a> appears to broadly support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>&#8217;s recent update (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/08\/ofcom-superfast-broadband-covers-83-percent-of-uk-and-uptake-tops-30-percent.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>), which similarly found that 79% could access 30Mbps+ and this climbs to 87% for the raw footprint of next generation broadband services (i.e. the 87% also includes areas that have been upgraded, but which can&#8217;t get &#8220;<em>superfast<\/em>&#8221; speeds on the new network).<\/p>\n<p>A lot of the upgrades have been completed by the private sector (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a>), although more recently\u00a0a lot\u00a0of the expansion has come from the state aid fuelled <a href=\"http:\/\/www.superfast-wales.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Superfast Cymru<\/a> project and the linked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bduk\" target=\"_blank\">Broadband Delivery UK<\/a> programme.<\/p>\n<p>The project is currently working with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> to make faster &#8220;<em>fibre broadband<\/em>&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>\/P) services available to 96% of Wales by the end of 2016 (691,000 premises) and a new deal was recently signed that should add another 42,000 homes and businesses to that total by June 2017 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/07\/wales-uk-signs-deal-to-expand-bt-fibre-broadband-services-to-more-areas.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>). So far around 500,000 of the target has been completed and take-up in related areas stands at about 15.6%, with the goal being 50% by 2024.<\/p>\n<p>As a side note it&#8217;s estimated that 0.8% of premises in Wales (around 10,000 premises) are only able to get a sluggish download speed of\u00a0sub-2Mbps, which the Government are aiming to plug\u00a0&#8220;<em>by 2016<\/em>&#8221; (i.e. the 2Mbps for all <strong>Universal Service Commitment<\/strong>); although that will\u00a0most likely be\u00a0resolved\u00a0via a less than ideal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\">Satellite<\/a> subsidy scheme.<\/p>\n<p>The map itself is broken into Parliamentary Constituencies and the total coverage is a clear improvement, although equally it&#8217;s painfully clear that many rural constituencies still have a lot of work to do. It&#8217;s also worth pointing out that most premises exist in the more urban areas, like Cardiff in the south, which has a big impact upon the total.
