{"id":10334,"date":"2015-10-13T08:03:14","date_gmt":"2015-10-13T07:03:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=10334"},"modified":"2015-10-13T08:17:09","modified_gmt":"2015-10-13T07:17:09","slug":"parent-of-london-wireless-broadband-isp-relish-suffers-gbp37-5m-loss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/10\/parent-of-london-wireless-broadband-isp-relish-suffers-gbp37-5m-loss.html","title":{"rendered":"Parent of London Wireless Broadband ISP Relish Suffers GBP37.5m Loss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The generically named <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ukbroadband.com\/\" target=\"_new\">UK Broadband Ltd.<\/a>, a sibling of Hong Kong based telecoms firm <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pccw.com\/?language=en_US\" target=\"_new\">PCCW<\/a> (HKT) and the company behind London fixed wireless ISP <a href=\"http:\/\/www.broadbandchoicespartners.co.uk\/goto?linktrackerid=3136&amp;tsid=39775\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Relish<\/a>, has reportedly been given one year to turn itself around after losses for 2014 quadrupled to \u00a337.5m on a turnover of just \u00a31.5m vs \u00a32m in 2013.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The company has tried for many years to launch a successful fixed wireless broadband provider in the United Kingdom, albeit with mixed results. Some years back they made their first attempt with an ISP called &#8216;Netvigator&#8217;, which later became known simply as &#8216;Now&#8217;, although this only covered premises in <strong>Reading<\/strong> (England) and ended up being discontinued in 2009 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/story\/2009\/03\/18\/now-uk-wireless-broadband-isp-to-be-discontinued.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>However the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mynow.co.uk\/\" target=\"_new\">Now<\/a> brand was revived again in 2012 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/10\/4g-fixed-superfast-wireless-service-goes-live-in-southwark-and-reading-uk.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>) as part of a move to switch-on the country\u2019s first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> (LTE) based Fixed Wireless system for commercial services in parts of Reading and London (<strong>Southbank<\/strong> and the borough areas of<strong> Southwark<\/strong>), although this too was eventually paused until it was renamed and relaunched again as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.broadbandchoicespartners.co.uk\/goto?linktrackerid=3136&amp;tsid=39775\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Relish<\/a> last June 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The newly re-branded service from Relish, which operates in the somewhat niche <strong>3.4GHz<\/strong> and up spectrum bands (high capacity, but challenging for coverage and penetration through buildings), focused on offering unlimited broadband speeds of <strong>up to 50Mbps<\/strong> to homes in central London from just \u00a320 per month (no phone line required).<\/p>\n<p>The development was useful because there are still a fair few \u201c<em>slow spots<\/em>\u201d in the area where Relish operates, but despite that the ISP has struggled with some notorious teething problems (e.g. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2014\/12\/connection-drops-continue-hit-relishs-london-fixed-wireless-4g-users.html\" target=\"_blank\">frequent connection drops<\/a>) and will find it increasingly difficult to fight in an environment where local fixed line broadband connectivity is very gradually improving (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/09\/bts-gbp50m-plan-to-upgrade-broadband-in-30-uk-cities-starts-in-london.html\" target=\"_blank\">example<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>At this point UKB&#8217;s long held dream of being able to launch a national fixed wireless network across the UK continues to be a distant aspiration and one that appears to exist upon shaky foundations. The latest losses certainly won&#8217;t help matters, although it should be said that you&#8217;d expect a big loss in the first year of a new service because of the necessary early investment.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/finance\/newsbysector\/mediatechnologyandtelecoms\/telecoms\/11926851\/Operator-of-Relish-wireless-broadband-logs-heavy-losses.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Telegraph<\/a>, UKB&#8217;s latest accounts included the following statement: &#8220;<em>If there was insufficient customer demand for the proposed new services at price levels the company finds economically viable, an alternative business plan may have to be developed<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The availability of continued funding from PCCW is another crucial factor and it&#8217;s understood that UKB has been given at least another year to turn the company&#8217;s fortunes around.
