BTOpenreach, which is responsible for maintaining \/ managing access to BT<\/a>’s national UK telecoms and broadband network, has added a new “Fibre Index<\/em>” page to their website that adds a small amount of extra information about broadband usage on their network.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The new Fibre Index<\/a><\/strong> section is expected to be updated on a quarterly basis and forms part of Openreach<\/a>’s commitments to Ofcom<\/a>, which required them to make more information available to the public. But outside of a few choice highlights you won’t find a lot of detail and it really is very.. VERY basic.<\/p>\n

Fibre Index Highlights (June – August 2015)<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

* Traffic is lower in the summer.
\n* 23rd August 2015 was the peak day of data traffic on Openreach<\/a>’s network.
\n* The average superfast broadband usage per line is 190GB (GigaBytes) [165GB Download \/ 25GB Upload].
\n* 75% of data traffic is consumed by only 25% of customer lines.
\n* The highest demand occurs on Sunday evenings at 9pm.
\n* The average monthly data use per line is growing 40% year-on-year.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

After our highlights you now have pretty much no reason whatsoever to actually visit the Fibre Index section. Needless to say that we would have liked to see a bit more detail, such as a table showing how traffic varies through the year and by what quantity etc.<\/p>\n

Ian Lawrence, Openreach<\/a> Chief Engineer, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“While it\u2019s not surprising to see that total data usage continues to grow, the pace and scale of growth and adoption is extraordinary.<\/em><\/p>\n

Over half of UK households have at least two different internet enabled devices and nearly a third has seven or more, all usually connected at the same time. And now with the rapid growth of Smart TVs all needing a fast broadband connection, what we can see is that consumers and businesses will demand even more from fibre.<\/em><\/p>\n

This summer data usage peaked on 23 August. During that week we saw the World Athletics Championship, the Belgian Grand Prix, and several major news stories break which may well have contributed to this rise in data consumption. We also saw usage peak during the evening on Sundays, perhaps when people are catching up on box-sets or Skyping friends and family.<\/em><\/p>\n

I\u2019m proud the work by Openreach engineers is enabling millions of people to connect with each other in new ways and at a faster rate than ever before. Our fibre network is more than able to deliver the speed and capacity that people need both today and for years to come. The roll out of Openreach\u2019s fibre broadband network will be one of the great British success stories in history<\/em>.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Openreach seem able to supply a bit more detail about their engineer performance on the ‘Our responsibilities<\/a>‘ page and so hopefully in the future they can do the same for their ‘Fibre Index’.<\/p>\n
