{"id":1087,"date":"2012-06-20T02:05:10","date_gmt":"2012-06-20T01:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=1087"},"modified":"2012-06-20T06:24:46","modified_gmt":"2012-06-20T05:24:46","slug":"uk-isp-talktalk-claim-consumers-lose-4mbps-poor-broadband-setups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/06\/uk-isp-talktalk-claim-consumers-lose-4mbps-poor-broadband-setups.html","title":{"rendered":"UK ISP TalkTalk Claims Consumers Lose 4Mbps to Poor Broadband Setups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Internet and phone provider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a> has today suggested that over 500,000 UK homes could be <strong>bleeding 4Mbps<\/strong> (Megabits per second) of broadband speed because of &#8220;<em>poor in-home setups<\/em>&#8220;, which is allegedly &#8220;<em>equivalent to 2.3 Million Mb of speed being lost every second<\/em>&#8221; and they know how to fix it.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The ISP states that &#8220;<em>British homes will leak 72 billion Gigabytes of bandwidth capacity, which is more than enough to power YouTube around the year<\/em>&#8220;. It suggests a further 2.5 million homes could see a &#8220;<em>smaller<\/em>&#8221; increase to their broadband speed just by &#8220;<em>making some simple changes themselves<\/em>&#8220;, though many people never attempt to do so. As an example it&#8217;s widely know that issues, such as <strong>faulty wiring<\/strong> or interference from your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> phone socket, can cause a noticeable loss of speed.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Dan Downham, One of TalkTalks Bright Sparks Engineers, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>A bit of basic home maintenance and some re-jigging of the wiring in the living room could speed up internet connections no end.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>You can lose anything up to 4 megabits per second of speed simply due to a poor in home set up. When you consider that the average home gets a broadband speed of 7.6 megabits per second, that\u2019s an awful lot of bandwidth going to waste.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The megabits are coming into your home but they\u2019re going to waste before they can be put to good use. People need to think of broadband in the same way as water and electricity. It\u2019s a commodity that can go to waste if you\u2019re not careful<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><strong>The Most Common Problems Found<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>31% &#8211; speed lost through poor wiring<\/em><br \/>\n<em> 20% &#8211; router needed to be set up or reconfigured<\/em><br \/>\n<em> 17% &#8211; phone socket not properly set up<\/em><br \/>\n<em> 14% &#8211; new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\">ADSL<\/a> broadband filter required<\/em><br \/>\n<em> 13 % &#8211; other problems such as customers not connecting to the router to the master socket<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Other measures that can &#8220;<em>reduce broadband waste<\/em>&#8221; include plugging routers or modems directly into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> Master Socket and fitting filters to stop other devices connected to your phone line from interfering with the broadband service. Most consumers should be doing this anyway but it&#8217;s not always easy to locate your master socket and some probably find it difficult to understand their ISPs guidance.<\/p>\n<p>Alternatively <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a> claims that customers who use its <strong>Speed Checker<\/strong> to test their line might be able to gain a <strong>free visit<\/strong> from one of the ISPs <strong>Bright Sparks <\/strong>engineers (powered by QubeGB), which can perform a Speed Optimisation visit (normal price \u00a350).
