{"id":11135,"date":"2016-02-10T10:37:22","date_gmt":"2016-02-10T10:37:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=11135"},"modified":"2016-02-10T10:38:00","modified_gmt":"2016-02-10T10:38:00","slug":"rural-anglia-farmers-report-slow-broadband-and-poor-mobile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/02\/rural-anglia-farmers-report-slow-broadband-and-poor-mobile.html","title":{"rendered":"Rural Norfolk UK Farmers Report Slow Broadband and Poor Mobile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new survey of over 800 businesses and farmers in the Anglia region of England (e.g. Norfolk) has found that 57% suffer from &#8220;<em>poor<\/em>&#8221; or &#8220;<em>very poor<\/em>&#8221; mobile phone signals and 31% can only receive a basic home broadband connection that delivers a download speed of less than 2Mbps.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The survey also found that just 10% of respondents were able to receive a &#8220;<em>superfast broadband<\/em>&#8221; connection of greater than 24Mbps and 34% said they were unable to connect more than one device to their Internet connection. The latter probably meant that the speed wasn&#8217;t good enough to support more than one device because you can still connect multiple devices to even a slow home service, but it wouldn\u2019t be a very good experience.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Clarke Willis, CEO of at Anglia Farmers, said (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.edp24.co.uk\/news\/tech\/poor_connectivity_continues_to_fail_norfolk_s_rural_businesses_1_4412613\" target=\"_blank\">EDP24<\/a>):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Norfolk County Council have done a great job in rolling out the BBfN programme, but we know there are still big areas not covered and, therefore, we are all going to need to put together a plan to ensure we cover these areas<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It&#8217;s worth pointing out that the first phase of the related <a href=\"http:\/\/www.betterbroadbandnorfolk.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Better Broadband for Norfolk<\/a> project with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> completed in November 2015, although it was only able to extend &#8220;<em>fibre broadband<\/em>&#8221; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a>\/P) services to 83% of local homes and businesses (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/11\/norfolk-complete-first-bduk-and-bt-fibre-broadband-rollout-contract.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A second <strong>Superfast Extension Programme<\/strong> (SEP) contract also exists (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/01\/norfolk-uk-signs-bt-deal-expand-fibre-broadband-coverage-90.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>), which has pledged to push the network footprint out to reach 90% of premises by 2017 (we suspect that this 90% may reference &#8220;<em>superfast<\/em>&#8221; 24Mbps+ coverage). Admittedly the Government&#8217;s national UK target for the same date is 95%, but then Norfolk is a very challenging rural county with lots of sparse communities.<\/p>\n<p>Most of the farmers surveyed will no doubt reside in many of those overlooked areas and as such the results are sadly no surprise.
