{"id":11421,"date":"2016-03-31T13:04:24","date_gmt":"2016-03-31T12:04:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=11421"},"modified":"2016-03-31T13:04:24","modified_gmt":"2016-03-31T12:04:24","slug":"adopting-700mhz-mobile-may-force-160k-uk-homes-replace-aerials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/03\/adopting-700mhz-mobile-may-force-160k-uk-homes-replace-aerials.html","title":{"rendered":"Adopting 700MHz for Mobile May Force 160K UK Homes to Replace Aerials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The on-going effort to re-purpose the 700MHz radio spectrum band (currently used by UK Digital Terrestrial TV (DTTV) services) and make it available for use by Mobile Broadband (<a class=\"shortlink shortlink-116 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"4g\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_mobile.php\">4G<\/a>, <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-166 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/5g\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"5G Mobile Technology\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_mobile.php\">5G<\/a> etc.) in time for 2020 (Q2) could force 100,000 &#8211; 160,000 UK households to replace their aerials.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"shortlink shortlink-133 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"ofcom\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\">Ofcom<\/a>&#8217;s latest <a href=\"http:\/\/stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk\/binaries\/consultations\/700-clearance-cfi\/summary\/700_MHz_Implementation.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">impact consultation<\/a> (Call for Input) on the development suggests that the vast majority of consumers (14-20 million households) will be able to handle the change with a simple retune of their existing <strong>Freeview TV<\/strong> receiver equipment.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2014-article-illustrations\/dttv_frequency_bands.gif\" alt=\"dttv_frequency_bands\" \/><\/div>\n<p>However the regulator&#8217;s latest research suggests that some will face a more significant challenge. For example, <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-133 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"ofcom\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\">Ofcom<\/a> predicts that 100,000 &#8211; 160,000 UK households may need to replace their aerials (expected to cost around \u00a3150 per home) and 40,000 &#8211; 110,000 households may have to re-point their aerials (i.e. make it point in a different direction) at a cost of around \u00a350.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently &#8220;<em>a very small number of viewers may need to change TV platform<\/em>&#8221; (e.g. switching away from terrestrial and adopting <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-119 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/satellite\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"satellite\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_satellite.php\">satellite<\/a> or cable) and this could cost around \u00a3220 per home, although it&#8217;s not clear precisely how many could be required to take this course of action.<\/p>\n<p>Back in 2014 Ofcom estimated that only between 105,000 and 110,000 households might need to replace their rooftop aerial. However they have since done more research on the real-world distribution and performance of different types of aerial, which has found that more homes could be impacted than originally thought.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s suggested that those most likely to need a full aerial replacement will live in the following transmitter areas: 1. Limavady, 2. Angus, 3. Selkirk, 4. Pontop Pike, 5. Winter Hill, 6. Carmel, 7. Huntshaw Cross, 8. Mendip, 9. Oxford, 10. Midhurst and 11.
