{"id":11461,"date":"2016-04-05T13:38:36","date_gmt":"2016-04-05T12:38:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=11461"},"modified":"2016-04-05T13:39:01","modified_gmt":"2016-04-05T12:39:01","slug":"ofcom-release-final-uk-vs-eu-broadband-scorecard-results-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/04\/ofcom-release-final-uk-vs-eu-broadband-scorecard-results-2015.html","title":{"rendered":"Ofcom Release Final UK vs EU Broadband Scorecard Results for 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> has published the final version of their most recent European Broadband Scorecard, which shows how the United Kingdom compares with Europe&#8217;s other major countries in terms of delivering the Government\u2019s ambition for us to have the &#8220;<em>fastest broadband of any major European country by 2015<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As a quick recap the Government originally said that they wanted us to have &#8220;<em>the best superfast broadband network in Europe by 2015<\/em>&#8220;, which was watered down in 2012 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/08\/waiting-game-continues-as-jeremy-hunt-mp-restates-uk-broadband-policy.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>) to deliver the more easily achievable &#8220;<em>fastest broadband of any major European country by 2015<\/em>&#8221; (i.e. comparing us against France, Germany, Italy and Spain [EU5] rather than the whole of Europe).<\/p>\n<p>The Scorecard reports on coverage, take-up and use, price, speed and choice. It also draws on three main sources of data: the EC Digital Agenda Scoreboard 2015 to year-end 2014, Eurostat data on fixed broadband household take-up and online activities relating to Q2 2015 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>&#8217;s own analysis of pricing data sourced from Teligen (July 2015). Suffice to say that the data is woefully out of date and won&#8217;t reflect the most recent progress.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Note:<\/span> <em>Data and rankings relating to year-end 2014 and Q2 2015 are listed first. Data and rankings for year-end 2013 and Q1 2014 are listed below in italics and parentheses<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2016-internet-statistics\/ofcom_uk_broadband_scorecard_2015_update.gif\" alt=\"ofcom_uk_broadband_scorecard_2015_update\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The UK ranks first on almost all metrics except the number of fixed broadband connections per 100 people, where it ranks joint second behind <strong>France<\/strong>, and in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> (mobile broadband) coverage, where it ranks second behind <strong>Germany<\/strong>, and in the percentage of individuals who interacted online with public authorities within the last 12 months, where it ranks joint third with Spain after France and Germany.<\/p>\n<p>Crucially we are top of the key metric for <strong>Next Generation Access<\/strong> (NGA) broadband coverage, although it&#8217;s worth noting that this changes when we look at all of Europe&#8217;s 28 member states and in this picture the UK only ranks 9th overall. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> also tends to lump everything from slower <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\">FTTC<\/a> (VDSL) to ultrafast <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a>\/P under the same NGA title.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-none\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/wp-content\/gallery\/2016-internet-statistics\/ofcom_uk_vs_europe_broadband_coverage_2015.gif\" alt=\"ofcom_uk_vs_europe_broadband_coverage_2015\" \/><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Ofcom&#8217;s European Broadband Scorecard 2015<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk\/binaries\/research\/broadband-research\/scorecard\/2016\/european-broadband-scorecard-2015-update.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk\/..\/european-broadband-scorecard-2015-update.pdf<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ofcom has published the final version of their most recent European Broadband Scorecard, which shows how the United Kingdom compares with Europe&#8217;s other major countries in terms of delivering the Government\u2019s ambition for us to have the &#8220;fastest broadband of any major European country by 2015&#8220;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[471,37,85,36,34],"class_list":["post-11461","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uk_isp_news","tag-bduk","tag-digital-agenda","tag-europe","tag-ofcom-regulation","tag-statistics"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.7 -
