{"id":11469,"date":"2016-04-07T07:42:58","date_gmt":"2016-04-07T06:42:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=11469"},"modified":"2016-04-07T10:53:48","modified_gmt":"2016-04-07T09:53:48","slug":"sky-virgin-media-moot-big-mobile-capacity-deals-three-uk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/04\/sky-virgin-media-moot-big-mobile-capacity-deals-three-uk.html","title":{"rendered":"Sky and Virgin Media Moot Mobile Network Capacity Deal with Three UK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reports indicate that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> and Sky (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Broadband<\/a>) could both sign significant mobile network capacity deals with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> (CK Hutchison Holdings), which is dependent upon whether or not the European Commission approves the proposed merger with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> UK (Telefonica).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At present <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a>&#8217;s mobile service is supplied by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a>, although the mobile operator&#8217;s recent acquisition by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a> has encouraged Virgin to look at alternatives. Virgin briefly explored the possibility of a much more significant deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vodafoneuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Vodafone<\/a>, but those talks eventually collapsed (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/09\/no-deal-as-vodafone-and-liberty-global-talks-collapse.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile Sky have already signed a <strong>Mobile Virtual Network Operator<\/strong> (MVNO) deal with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> and they aim to deliver a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/skymobile\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Mobile<\/a><\/strong> product by the end of 2016, which will turn them into a quad-play provider. But today&#8217;s big news is that both Virgin and Sky may now be considering a major deal to buy capacity from the merged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> + <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At present Telefonica and Hutchinson are still fighting tooth and nail to get their proposed <strong>\u00a310.25bn<\/strong> UK merger past the regulators, which isn&#8217;t easy when both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> and the EC are opposed to the deal (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/02\/last-ditch-warning-as-ofcom-tells-eu-to-reject-o2-and-three-uk-merger.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/03\/ofcom-warns-20-percent-price-hike-three-uk-o2-merger.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>). However, in an effort to placate some of those concerns, Hutchison made a number of concessions (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/02\/three-uk-pledges-to-retain-low-prices-if-o2-merger-gets-approval.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>) and one of those involved selling capacity on their network.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Hutchison&#8217;s Proposal:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Three+O2 will enable other meaningful competitors in the UK market to offer services on a completely level playing field by offering for sale fractional shared ownership interests in our network capacity \u2013 in effect selling slices of the same network capacity and quality we use to serve our own customers. This is unprecedented in the UK telecom wholesale market. It eliminates the tricks some wholesalers use to disadvantage their wholesale customers and thus make it harder for them in turn to make competitive offerings to their own customers. This approach will deliver real competition, not just slogans.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2016\/04\/06\/o2-takeover-at-the-mercy-of-brussels-as-hutchison-does-2bn-mobil\/\" target=\"_blank\">Telegraph<\/a>, Sky is alleged to have preliminarily agreed to a <strong>\u00a32bn<\/strong> contract that would see them take a 20% share for over 10 years if the takeover of O2 goes through. Similarly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> is said to have reached an agreement to take 10% of the capacity on the merged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/threeuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Three UK<\/a> and O2 network, which is estimated to be worth around <strong>\u00a31bn<\/strong>, although this may change if <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> offer better terms or the merger falls through.<\/p>\n<p>The EC&#8217;s competition review was originally supposed to rule on the merger earlier this year, although Hutchison&#8217;s proposed concessions have required some additional time for review.
