{"id":1208,"date":"2012-07-05T14:16:18","date_gmt":"2012-07-05T13:16:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=1208"},"modified":"2012-07-05T14:19:19","modified_gmt":"2012-07-05T13:19:19","slug":"analyst-expects-sky-to-bid-for-budget-uk-internet-provider-rival-talktalk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/07\/analyst-expects-sky-to-bid-for-budget-uk-internet-provider-rival-talktalk.html","title":{"rendered":"Analyst Expects Sky to Bid for Budget UK Internet Provider Rival TalkTalk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s risky <strong>\u00a3738 million<\/strong> grab of 38 <strong>Premier League<\/strong> football games (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/06\/bt-vision-broadband-iptv-service-gains-major-uk-football-content-boost.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>) for its BTVision TV (IPTV) service has allegedly sparked rumours in the city that <strong>BSkyB<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Sky Broadband<\/a>) could be about to make a bid for arch rival <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a>, which may or may not be a good thing.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Liberum Capital&#8217;s Lawrence Sugarman\u00a0today told the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/business\/business-news\/market-round-up-bskybs-mooted-bid-for-talktalk-gets-city-tongues-wagging-7917310.html\" target=\"_blank\">London Evening Standard<\/a> newspaper that &#8220;<em>we believe Sky is keen to build on its broadband position<\/em>&#8221; and buying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a> would allegedly be &#8220;<em>an ideal way<\/em>&#8221; to strike back at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>&#8217;s movement onto its home turf.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally such talk should be taken with a <strong>HUGE PINCH OF SALT<\/strong> since no official offer is known to have been made and rumours like this aren&#8217;t uncommon. But would such a hypothetical takeover be a good thing? Financially it would certainly be good news for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">TalkTalk<\/a>, which has struggled to plug a long-running customer bleed (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/05\/uk-isp-talktalk-broadband-subscriber-decline-slows-to-4-066-million.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>) that followed its troubled <strong>2009 acquisition of Tiscali<\/strong> for \u00a3236m.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly Sky, which currently has 3,863,000 broadband subscribers (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/05\/bskyb-tops-3-86-million-uk-sky-broadband-isp-subscribers.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>), would instantly take on TalkTalk&#8217;s 4 million internet users to leapfrog <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Virgin Media<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>; becoming <strong>the markets largest broadband ISP<\/strong>. But Sky already has a strong broadband platform, which is managed by Easynet, and merging that with TalkTalk&#8217;s wouldn&#8217;t necessarily produce many cost-savings, it might even cause some problems.<\/p>\n<p>Sky also has an arguably <strong>better established reputation<\/strong> than TalkTalk, which has suffered after a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> investigations in 2011 exposed flaws in its customer service and quality (many of which stemmed from the Tiscali buyout). Customers might well fear that the same problems that afflicted TalkTalk&#8217;s post-Tiscali landscape could well impact Sky too, which would be a disaster for customers, but then it might do exactly the opposite.<\/p>\n<p>In any case this is all swings and roundabouts until somebody makes a serious offer.
