At present the band is only used for older <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3G<\/a> technology.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The move is designed to support <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a>&#8217;s delivery of the Government&#8217;s new <strong>Emergency Services Network<\/strong> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2015\/12\/government-picks-ee-to-deliver-4g-network-for-uk-emergency-services.html\">details<\/a>) and that in turn will help the operator to achieve their goal of expanding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a> network coverage to reach <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/04\/ee-target-95-percent-4g-landmass-cover-brings-support-back-uk.html\">95% of the UK&#8217;s landmass<\/a> (99.8% population coverage) by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/eebroadband\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">EE<\/a> has also asked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> to vary its <strong>800MHz<\/strong> and <strong>1800MHz<\/strong> licences so that they can provide a backhaul (network capacity supply) path to connect mobile base stations, which they claim will also be used by the emergency services in the 1899.9 &#8211; 1909.9MHz band. So far <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> appears to have no firm objections.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><a href=\"http:\/\/stakeholders.ofcom.org.uk\/consultations\/EE-licence-variation-1990-1920MHz\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Ofcom&#8217;s Statement<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The requested licence variation would increase the amount of EE\u2019s existing spectrum holdings which can be used for LTE equipment by 10 MHz. A similar licence variation for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/o2uk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">O2<\/a> and H3G (the holders of the other 10 MHz of spectrum in the 1900 MHz unpaired band) would increase the availability of LTE spectrum for each of them in their existing spectrum holdings by 5 MHz.<\/p>\n<p>We have considered whether our proposal could have implications for competition in the provision of mobile services. Our understanding is that this spectrum is unlikely to be useful for the provision of general, wide area, mobile services and is more suitable for specific, \u2018niche\u2019, applications such as that which EE is planning.<\/p>\n<p>We therefore have not identified any reason why we should not agree to the licence variation on competition grounds.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The decision would also open the door to rival operators making the same variation request.
