{"id":12371,"date":"2016-08-24T14:35:23","date_gmt":"2016-08-24T13:35:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=12371"},"modified":"2016-08-24T14:36:31","modified_gmt":"2016-08-24T13:36:31","slug":"central-manchester-trials-bus-stops-free-wifi-usb-chargers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/08\/central-manchester-trials-bus-stops-free-wifi-usb-chargers.html","title":{"rendered":"Central Manchester Trials Bus Stops with Free WiFi and USB Chargers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Public bus transport in Manchester city centre is already quite well covered by free <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> hotspots, but now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tfgm.com\" target=\"_blank\">Transport for Greater Manchester<\/a> (TfGM) has gone one further by deploying several &#8220;<em>super<\/em>&#8221; bus shelters that also offer free public <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> connectivity and charging points for Smartphones.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>At present the shelters only exist at a few points around the central Piccadilly station, although if the new &#8220;<em>super shelters<\/em>&#8221; prove to be successful then there are already some strong indications that they could be rolled out across the region.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Councillor Andrew Fender, Chair of the TfGM committee, said (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk\/news\/greater-manchester-news\/britains-first-bus-stop-free-11790131\" target=\"_blank\">MEN<\/a>):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a really exciting and unique scheme for Manchester as this pilot shelter is the first of its kind in the UK. One of our key aims is to provide an improved public transport network that encourages more people to choose sustainable and more environmentally friendly ways to travel \u2013 especially in the city centre.<\/p>\n<p>Research indicates that improved public transport environments \u2013 with technology built in \u2013 encourage more people to use them and that\u2019s what we\u2019re testing out here. We\u2019ll be asking people who use this bus stop for their views over the coming weeks and more new services and facilities could be trialled here.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apparently the funding for all this has come from the Government&#8217;s <strong>Department for Transport<\/strong>, although not everybody is happy at the idea of spending more on such shelters when local bus services in other areas are being reduced or removed entirely.
