A figure of around \u00a360m is currently being mooted (up from a starting offer of \u00a320m).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"shortlink shortlink-94 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/youview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"youview\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.youview.com\">YouView<\/a> originally started life as a Joint Venture project between the <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-95 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bbc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"bbc\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\">BBC<\/a>, ITV, <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-145\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"BT\">BT<\/a>, Channel 4, <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-59\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/tt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"talktalk\">TalkTalk<\/a>, Arqiva and Channel 5 (Five). The platform was designed to be the next step beyond <strong>Freeview<\/strong> (the Free-to-air digital terrestrial television service), although in the end the only real takers for it were Pay TV customers from BT and TalkTalk.<\/p>\n<p>Since then Freeview has gone on to separately develop their own Internet-connected <strong>Freeview Play<\/strong> service, which is currently being added to a lot of new TV&#8217;s and set-top-box devices. But that has left a big question mark to hang over the fate of <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-94 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/youview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"youview\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.youview.com\">YouView<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the one side BT are keen to foster stronger development of YouView in order to keep up with the enhancements being offered by rivals Sky (<a class=\"shortlink shortlink-86\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"Sky Broadband\">Sky Broadband<\/a>) and <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-65\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/vm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"virgin media\">Virgin Media<\/a>. On the other hand TalkTalk will sell, but they have reservations about losing control of their Pay TV platform to BT without some form of commitment towards future support.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile the <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-95 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/bbc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"bbc\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\">BBC<\/a> would probably be happy to be shot of YouView, but they probably don&#8217;t want it to seem like they just spent the past few years&#8217; subsidising the creation of a platform for BT with tax payers\u2019 money. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2016\/09\/22\/bt-in-60m-youview-takeover-talks-with-bbc\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Telegraph<\/a>, most of YouView&#8217;s shareholders are interested in doing a deal, so it&#8217;s just a question of what that looks like and if the BBC or TalkTalk agree.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>BT are rumoured to be mooting the acquisition of broadband based Video-on-Demand and Catch-Up TV (IPTV) platform, YouView, which underpins both their Pay TV service and that of several other ISPs (TalkTalk, JT etc.).
