One of the country’s largest broadband ISPs has revealed that the recent censorship of The Pirate Bay<\/strong> website has had only a short-lived impact upon overall P2P file sharing traffic, with data volumes dipping 11%<\/strong> immediately after the ban before returning “pretty much back to where they were before<\/em>“.<\/p>\n


\nThe Pirate Bay, along with another website (Newzbin 2<\/strong>), have over the past year both been blocked by six of the country’s largest internet providers (i.e. BT<\/a>, TalkTalk<\/a>, Virgin Media<\/a>, Sky Broadband<\/a>, O2<\/a> and Orange UK). Since then six more websites <\/strong>have recently been identified for similar action in the future (here<\/a>), although these have yet to be confirmed.<\/p>\n

This followed a successful Court Order<\/strong>, which saw Rights Holders using Section 97A of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act<\/strong> to force the measure upon ISPs because the sites were deemed to facilitate copyright infringement<\/strong> (here<\/a>).<\/p>\n

But such web blocking \/ filtering measures are incredibly easy to circumvent<\/strong><\/a> (e.g. VPN, Proxy Servers etc.), while others warned that the massive publicity surrounding the effort could be counter-productive (i.e. helping to advertise the related sites). One of Europe\u2019s largest ISPs, XS4ALL<\/a>, recently published a graph<\/a> which showed that overall P2P traffic through its network had actually increased since an identical restriction was imposed against Dutch ISPs.<\/p>\n

Now one of the country’s biggest broadband ISPs, which spoke to the BBC<\/a> on condition of anonymity, has revealed similar findings within its own UK network.<\/p>\n

A source at the unnamed ISP said:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“We saw a fall at the time of the block, made more dramatic by the increasing amount of such traffic in the weeks leading up to it. But volumes are already pretty much back to where they were before<\/em>.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In fairness it should be said that ISPs generally only keep a very vague record of overall network activity, which cannot identify precisely what type of files are being transferred over P2P networks (legal, unlawful or illegal content etc.). As a result it’s difficult to know what the real impact has been, although users of such content tend to switch over to a different site or simply work their way around the block itself. In any case overall P2P traffic, which was the primary focus of The Pirate Bay, appears not to have suffered.<\/p>\n

The British Phonographic Industry<\/a> (BPI), which represents many of the related Rights Holders, claimed that its goal was to “reduce UK use of The Pirate Bay<\/em>“. Apparently this, they claim, has been achieved because The Pirate Bay’s UK website ranking has dropped from 50 to 282, which is perhaps more a reflection of the blocks affect on linear ranking systems than actual site popularity (if anything it now seems to be more popular) and is nothing to do with P2P traffic itself.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
