{"id":12997,"date":"2016-11-28T09:04:15","date_gmt":"2016-11-28T09:04:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=12997"},"modified":"2016-11-28T10:27:02","modified_gmt":"2016-11-28T10:27:02","slug":"kaspersky-lab-reports-25-wifi-internet-hotspots-unsecured","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/11\/kaspersky-lab-reports-25-wifi-internet-hotspots-unsecured.html","title":{"rendered":"Kaspersky Lab Reports 25% of WiFi Internet Hotspots are Unsecured"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Internet security firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaspersky.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kaspersky Lab<\/a> has analysed 31 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> hotspots from around the world and found that 22% have no security (i.e. no password or encryption), while a further 2.7% only adopt the weakest form of Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryption that is easily hacked.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The good news is that the majority of hotspots run the more reliable form of <strong>Wi-Fi Protected Access<\/strong> (WPA) encryption, although it&#8217;s not clear how many of those were WPA and how many used the more modern WPA2 method.<\/p>\n<p>Mind you anybody who picks a weak password for their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> network is still putting themselves at risk and even many secured &#8220;<em>public<\/em>&#8221; hotspots are still vulnerable by virtue of the fact that they&#8217;re not completely closed networks (i.e. used by customers of pubs, restaurants etc.).<\/p>\n<p>Apparently many of the countries with the highest percentage of unsecured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/wifi\">WiFi<\/a> hotspots include major tourist destinations (hardly surprising), such as France, Israel, Thailand and the USA.<\/p>\n<p>At this point it&#8217;s worth noting that a separate study from Norton recently found that 42% couldn&#8217;t tell if a WiFi network was truly secure or not and 61% of consumers believed their personal information was safe when using a WiFi hotspot (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/06\/norton-42-people-can-tell-wi-fi-network-secure-not.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Similarly ISPreview.co.uk recently conducted a survey of its own, which found that 72% of our readers still prefer to get online via Mobile Broadband (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/3g\">3G<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/4g\">4G<\/a>) when outside of the house and that&#8217;s largely due to concerns about WiFi security or fiddly sign-up forms (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/10\/study-mobile-broadband-still-popular-risky-public-wi-fi.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>As usual some of the risk can be mitigated by using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to help protect your connection when going online via a public WiFi network, although most people still aren\u2019t familiar enough with the technology.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Internet security firm Kaspersky Lab has analysed 31 million WiFi hotspots from around the world and found that 22% have no security (i.e. no password or encryption), while a further 2.7% only adopt the weakest form of Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) encryption that is easily hacked.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[479,476],"class_list":["post-12997","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uk_isp_news","tag-security","tag-wifi"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.0 -
