{"id":13198,"date":"2016-12-31T01:56:01","date_gmt":"2016-12-31T01:56:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=13198"},"modified":"2016-12-31T03:50:35","modified_gmt":"2016-12-31T03:50:35","slug":"sky-broadband-wont-sell-people-unable-get-2mbps-speeds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/12\/sky-broadband-wont-sell-people-unable-get-2mbps-speeds.html","title":{"rendered":"Sky Broadband Won&#8217;t Sell to People Unable to Get 2Mbps Speeds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reliable sources have informed ISPreview.co.uk that <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-86\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"Sky Broadband\">Sky Broadband<\/a> has recently made a stealthy change to their Internet access packages, which means they are no longer selling broadband (of any type) to customers with a Minimum Access Line Speed (MALS) of 2Mbps or less.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The move, which effectively locks out many of those still stuck on slower or poor quality copper <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-121 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"digital subscriber line\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_DSL.php\">ADSL<\/a> lines (e.g. people in remote rural areas), comes shortly after Sky made the headlines by announcing that their broadband packages would start promoting &#8220;<em>average speeds<\/em>&#8221; alongside the more optimistic \/ standard &#8220;<em>up to<\/em>&#8221; rates (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/12\/sky-broadband-adopts-average-headline-uk-isp-speeds.html\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>One of the fears about adopting an approach that advocates advertising &#8220;<em>average speeds<\/em>&#8221; is that it could encourage some providers to start rejecting orders from those with slower lines, which over the longer term may result in the ISP being able to raise their &#8220;<em>average speeds<\/em>&#8221; in promotions (i.e. the speeds would no longer be dragged down as much by those with slower lines).<\/p>\n<p>This also limits the choice for those who still suffer from 2Mbps or slower lines, perhaps unfairly so. On the other hand <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-133 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"ofcom\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\">Ofcom<\/a> estimates that only around 1% of UK premises cannot get a download speed of more than 2Mbps (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2016\/12\/89-uk-covered-30mbps-broadband-1-7-can-get-full-fibre.html\">here<\/a>), although the real-world figure may be a tiny bit higher.<\/p>\n<p>At this point we should highlight that most <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-86\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/bskyb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"Sky Broadband\">Sky Broadband<\/a> subscribers use the ISPs unbundled (<a class=\"shortlink shortlink-108 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/llu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"llu\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/jargon\/jargon_detail.php?LLU---Local-Loop-Unbundling-53\">LLU<\/a>) network, which is available to a little over 90% of the United Kingdom. However Sky does still connect a fair few subscribers in the remaining 10% of the UK via their off-net <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-145\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/britishtelecom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" title=\"BT\">BT<\/a> based broadband service (a good proportion of these will be slower or rural lines).<\/p>\n<p>Sky has confirmed to us that the policy change was implemented on 13th December 2016, just before they adopted &#8220;<em>average speeds<\/em>&#8221; and perhaps unsurprisingly it&#8217;s been done very quietly. Separately we also note that some of Sky&#8217;s On-Demand video content requires a compatible box and minimum download speed of 2Mbps.<\/p>\n<p>In Sky&#8217;s view those who suffer speeds of 2Mbps or less on <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-121 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/adsl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"digital subscriber line\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_DSL.php\">ADSL<\/a> lines will encounter a poor broadband experience (e.g. trouble streaming video), but the ISP did inform us that they will offer an <a class=\"shortlink shortlink-120 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"fttc\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_cable.php\">FTTC<\/a> (VDSL) based &#8220;<em>fibre broadband<\/em>&#8221; connection as an alternative if its available and of course that&#8217;s assuming it can go faster than 2Mbps (note: many ISPs also consider sub-2Mbps speeds on VDSL\/<a class=\"shortlink shortlink-120 shortlink-chref\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/fttc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"\" title=\"fttc\" data-chref=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/broadband_cable.php\">FTTC<\/a> to be where they draw the viable performance line).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reliable sources have informed ISPreview.co.uk that Sky Broadband has recently made a stealthy change to their Internet access packages, which means they are no longer selling broadband (of any type) to customers with a Minimum Access Line Speed (MALS) of 2Mbps or less.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"ngg_post_thumbnail":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[66],"class_list":["post-13198","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uk_isp_news","tag-sky-broadband"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"","error":""},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
