{"id":1345,"date":"2012-07-26T01:08:04","date_gmt":"2012-07-26T00:08:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=1345"},"modified":"2012-07-25T14:31:43","modified_gmt":"2012-07-25T13:31:43","slug":"b4rn-buy-capacity-for-its-ftth-lancashire-rural-broadband-network-from-geo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/07\/b4rn-buy-capacity-for-its-ftth-lancashire-rural-broadband-network-from-geo.html","title":{"rendered":"B4RN Buy Capacity for its FTTH Lancashire Rural Broadband Network from GEO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>\u00a31.86m<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/b4rn\" target=\"_blank\">B4RN<\/a> (<strong>Broadband 4 Rural North<\/strong>) scheme has moved another step closer to launching its community-built and ultra-fast 1Gbps <strong>fibre optic broadband<\/strong> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ftth\">FTTH<\/a>) service, which will reach several villages across rural north <strong>Lancashire<\/strong> UK, after it signed a crucial capacity deal with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geo-uk.net\" target=\"_new\">Geo Networks<\/a> (GEO).<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As a result <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/b4rn\" target=\"_blank\">B4RN<\/a> will be able to link its platform into GEO&#8217;s <strong>dark fibre network<\/strong>, which connects to a national peering centre at <strong>Manchester Telecity<\/strong>. That should be enough to give <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/b4rn\" target=\"_blank\">B4RN<\/a> all the capacity it needs to serve its target of <strong>2,500 properties<\/strong> across 350 square kms in Lancashire.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Barry Forde, CEO of B4RN, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>To ensure this project is viable we have to provide high bandwidth internet. In order to make this happen in a rural area we recognised that we needed to lease dark fibre. We did look at options from other providers but they aren\u2019t viable for us as they can\u2019t provide flexible capacity at a cost effective price. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>We chose Geo because it runs a first class, open-access network with an excellent reliability record. Leasing its fibre enables us to operate at a carrier level to bring superfast internet speeds to those in the remotest of areas. This will make a real difference to people\u2019s quality of life<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Chris Smedley, CEO of Geo, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>This is an extremely exciting project which will see some of the remotest parts of the UK enjoying broadband speeds unrivalled to most of the world\u2019s leading business cities. Leasing Geo\u2019s dark fibre is a genuine, future-proof investment decision for the community, which will benefit from reliable and flexible high-capacity services. As such, we are ideally placed to support this community project and we are looking forward to the network going live<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Earlier this week we reported that B4RN was already nearing completion of <strong>Phase 1<\/strong>, which has cost around <strong>\u00a3364,000<\/strong> and aims to <strong>connect 983 premises<\/strong> along 26 routes that involves the digging of 182,086 metres of trench (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2012\/07\/1gbps-lancashire-b4rn-broadband-connections-to-go-live-within-weeks.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>).
