{"id":13674,"date":"2017-03-22T09:35:13","date_gmt":"2017-03-22T09:35:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/?p=13674"},"modified":"2017-03-22T09:44:12","modified_gmt":"2017-03-22T09:44:12","slug":"broadband-isp-plusnet-fined-880000-ofcom-wrongful-billing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2017\/03\/broadband-isp-plusnet-fined-880000-ofcom-wrongful-billing.html","title":{"rendered":"Broadband ISP Plusnet Fined \u00a3880,000 by Ofcom for Wrongful Billing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Internet provider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/plusnetuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Plusnet<\/a> has today been hit by a fine of \u00a3880,000 after the national UK telecoms regulator ruled that they had incorrectly billed 1,025 ex-customers for landline and broadband services, which occurred between 26th May 2011 and 3rd September 2015.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The related customers had all previously cancelled their service, yet <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/plusnetuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Plusnet<\/a> continued to bill them and as a result the group was overcharged by more than<strong> \u00a3500,000<\/strong> in total. We should point out that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/go\/plusnetuk\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Plusnet<\/a> voluntarily submitted itself for investigation after first discovering the issue last year &#8220;<em>whilst undertaking a routine asset reconciliation exercise of its customer base.<\/em>&#8221; As part of that process the ISP identified that some customers had been charged despite having no active telephone or broadband service.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently Plusnet has made repeated attempts to refund all affected ex-customers by letter and by phone. So far the ISP has refunded 356 customers a total of \u00a3212,140, which included interest at a rate of 4% for each customer. Unfortunately they&#8217;ve not been able to contact everybody (many people will have moved home etc.) and so have donated the remaining funds to a dozen local charities.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>Lindsey Fussell, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>&#8217;s Consumer Group Director, said:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There can be no margin for error, and no excuses, when it comes to billing customers correctly.<\/p>\n<p>This fine should serve as a reminder to telecoms companies that they must adhere to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a>\u2019s billing rules at all times, or face the consequences.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"bq1\"><p><strong>A Plusnet Spokesperson told ISPreview.co.uk in Feb 2017 (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/2017\/02\/ofcom-corrects-investigation-plusnets-wrongful-billing.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>):<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We reported it to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ispreview.co.uk\/index.php\/link\/ofcom\" target=\"_blank\">Ofcom<\/a> and contacted all affected customers so we could arrange a full refund, before the investigation had begun. A number of new robust measures have been implemented to prevent this from happening again.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Ofcom has given Plusnet 20 working days to pay the fine, which will be passed on to <strong>HM Treasury<\/strong>.
